Re: The JB "I call BS on everyone" thread

It seems that the main difference between the 80's model, Antiquity and modern JB's is the dynamic response and touch sensitivity of them. As Mincer pointed out, it still has a signature sound that's common across all JB's. I think the average user would be happy with a standard JB.
"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

        Fight fight fight!!!!!

I'm absolutely sure there are all kinds of flavors of JB out there that Seymour wound for this person or that person, and people had MJ build in the custom shop.

But - if the Original production JB is different from the next gen of JB is different from the JB I can walk into GC and buy at Sam Ash in any SIGNIFICANT/NOTICEABLE/PRACTICALLY relevant way is the real question.

And we are gonna try to answer that to some degree...

Just saying that once upon a time, Gibson decided to switch to Long v Short Tenon necks. Why? Easier build, cheaper. Did they build a short tenon and play it next to a long tenon and go "You know, feels the same, sounds the same, sustains the same." I bet they did. Years later, geeks find out and decide completely arbitrarily that long > short.

I bet you guys changed a couple of JB things. I will also bet that you listened, and said they sound the same. Because if it RELLY sounded different....you would have called it the NEW IMPROVED JB or the JB+ or the JB Classic and sold a crap ton more at higher prices.

But - I may be wrong. Fortunately for me, one of my super powers is science...So we will let the data do the talking. And test shortcomings will be noted. Along with a published methodology blah blah blah. You know - all that stuff the media doesn't tell you about Corona info.

Re: The JB "I call BS on everyone" thread

What's going to be funny is how when you post the test results, the arguments about what people can and cannot hear.
"You're not going to tell me what I'm hearing" kind of thing... I'll get some popcorn ready!

I agree there are differences between pickups, I've heard it with my own ears (pre and post robot aides) the fine line becomes whether or not it's a significant variance and if it can be "easily" recognizable.

The Audiophiles do have a good point in that it becomes more discernable as the audio quality gets better.

But in the tests defense, I have recorded plenty of vids both ways and the sound difference is still discernable with a phone/YouTube vid in most cases, even though the quality may suffer, you can hear differences.

So I don't see the need for a test.

It's been shown that there are several versions of the JB but that all have the JB sound. For the record, I liked the JB Antiquity best. More transparent especially in the top end.

Is the test simply to show whether those differences can be heard and described when we listen to someone playing who's musical tastes might be very different from our own and who's playing and musical choices we might not even like?

              Why bother?

So they all sound alike, but the Antiquity sounds different. Noted. :-)

Lord have mercy! For a moment there, I thought I was back in my "vintage audio" forum where we argue about the sonic difference in speaker cables.

So, for the record, it was ME who made this happen. Bro hug to both you guys for making the scene
And for my final trick, I will make all debate about which JB sounds like what disappear!!!!!!

I think whether the A5 magnet is roughcast or polished or degaussed is the "secret sauce" that makes otherwise identical pickups like the JB sound slightly different from each other.

And here is - at best - according to me - the only thing that *might* make a difference.

                                JB
sand-cast polished alnico 5 bar magnets
                                Antiquity JB
hand-aged roughcast alnico V magnet, custom degaussed
                                35th Anniversary JB
                                rough-cast alnico 5 magnets
                                Early production JB
                                rough-cast alnico 5 magnets
                                Concept Set
                                and Alnico-II in the bridge
