  • Recorded and released an entire album with the Custom 5/SLUG combo (link inside)

    Hey everybody,
First post here, so hopefully I'm putting it in the right place!

I just released my first full-length album from my groove metal/melodic heavy metal solo project Tragedy Mask, titled Theatrum Tragoedia, and I wanted to use this as an opportunity to gush about my absolute favorite pickup combination with which I recorded all of the guitar tracks on this album: Custom 5 in the neck, SLUG in the bridge. I have them in an LTD F200B tuned to Open D/Bb add11 (Bb - F - D - F - G - A.) Recorded through an iRig into Bias. I'll leave the written review below, but here are a couple songs from the album so you can hear:

This combination can take any amount of gain you give it without over-saturating or getting mushy, and there is virtually no volume drop between the neck and bridge. Despite its high output, the Custom 5 in the neck is surprisingly luscious and pristine--much like its little brother '59 but with a more defined bass frequency range. Highly responsive to the volume knob which makes it very versatile. The middle position is where this combination really shines for me--superb definition with a massive high-mid bite for distorted rhythm parts, and a very open, airy feel for cleans. Most of the cleans on this album, including the intro to the song Autothysis which I embedded above, were recorded on the middle position (though the clean lead was actually the SLUG in the bridge with the volume rolled off.) Then comes the SLUG. Don't be scared by it's ohm rating--it really sings. Absolutely vicious mid-to-high ranges with lots of harmonic saturation. But then if you roll off the volume just a bit, it really evens out and becomes great for slightly lower output stuff. Definitely not a one-trick pony.

Thanks for checking out the album! Cheers!
