I play clean most of the time . . . and half agree with this. With high gain, the tiniest finger noise or slightly open string is magnified and more difficult to control, and gain + volume takes a little getting used to to control feedback. Control of attack and pick dynamics with cleans is much less forgiving though. You can play sloppily either with clean or high gain and sound OK . . . but your sloppiness has to be a different kind of sloppiness for each.

High distortion (and therefore, compression) levels make extraneous noises louder. But you don't have to be nearly as precise as hitting a note dead-on, as it gets 'smoothed over'. You also don't have to worry about consistency in tone, as the level of distortion & compression takes care of that.

A controversial amp hot take? Here's some:

          - Very few guitarists on internet forums have ever modded their tube amp; let alone built one.
          - Most don't know how to bias, either
          - Many haven't ever played through a cranked non-master volume tube amp
          - Playing a tube amp with the Master Volume at a low setting is effectively neutering your amp
          - Many haven't experienced the audible bliss and longevity that is found in NOS tubes
          - If you are a peace-nik, you'll be shocked/triggered to know that some tubes were designed for military purposes

any amp's distorted tone will sound better with less gain and more volume

Running low wattage tube amps gets you worse not better low volume tones than many 50 to 100 watt tube amps do.

Like it or not, there will be a time where people who know how to fix tube amps (much less design them) are no more. I never met a kid who is remotely interested in that right now.

                        Re: Controversial Amplifier Hot Takes

                        Dumble tone is overrated.

The Recto series is homogenous and overrated.

Perfecting your technique is overrated when you can turn up the gain and play super fast, more notes through expensive gear always compensates for terrible vibrato and poor hand coordination.

Jim Marshall made a bunch of shrill, crappy sounding amps that nobody likes, and they've gotten crappier over time, people just think gold is cool.

Marshall has made a lot of duds over the decades.
