Re: New Idea for a Strat Build

I understand what you mean. White is way too bright, black looks “plain”. Too bad it’s not rear routed to show more flame.

I like 7 but it diminishes the flame.
    Oh no.....

    Oh Yeah!

This body is rear routed, and doesn't even have a rout for the jack. I will be over-routing the body with a standard Strat cavity template. It also doesn't have the burst yet. Everything I'm doing to it minimizes the figuring, and that's on purpose. Can't stand the look of Fenders without pick guards, and I'm not big on figured bodies. This body spoke to me on a whim, though. The color is great. I saw it not for what it is (something that's "not me"), but for what I could make it into fairly easily.

Re: New Idea for a Strat Build

Got the body yesterday, and it is quite nice. The green has more blue in it than I imagined. It's actually just barely turquoise, not green. So my plan of a burst out to hunter green and then black probably won't work (although the tort will now look even better against the color). I'll have to rethink the design a bit. Might leave it unbursted. Might make it 2TSB right out to black. Might transition to black using translucent gray lacquer.

Seeing the body in person has made me reconsider what I'm gonna do with it. I am messing around with guardless options as well. Some more noodling, with a much more accurate body color than I was building around before.

New 2 and New 5 are right up my alley. I’d build #2 today if I had that body! But I love vintage Charvels as much as vintage Fenders.

I'd love 6 without the pickup rings.

Getting closer and closer to picking a pair of Wilde L-500s for this guitar.

In that case, the choice is black or cream.

Also, I discovered a way to render the pickguard more accurately to the way it will be. Single ply burgundy celluloid with a black foil shield behind it.

I kinda like the cream better...but I think solid brushed chrome would look cool too.

Well, it's decided. The pickups have been ordered. A pair of L-500Cs, double black with chrome surrounds. Planning on mounting to the guard at first. Mounting rings might go on later if that doesn't look good.

                          Me too!

One thing going for the project is that I already own the neck I'm going to use, complete with hardware. And it's already finished, so all I need to do is paint the headstock face. That makes it a much cheaper project.

Well, that was quick! Just got a shipment notification for the pickups. I had read that Wilde wait times were up to six weeks.

                              Just ordered the bridge/vibrato.

Went with a Hipshot Contour – my first time using one on a project.

The trim rings on the Wildes are chrome, so I went with chrome instead of nickel. Also, Hipshot is backed up with orders, and no one has the nickel ones in stock right now, so chrome works out better anyhow. The Sperzel tuners on the MIM neck I'll be using are nickel, but hopefully the difference isn't too noticeable.

I almost picked that Hipshot, too, but eventually went with a Bladerunner. Let us know how the Hipshot turns out.
