  • New Idea for a Strat Build

Got a 2H Strat body on the way. Already have a neck or two I can put on it.

    First idea:

When I bought the body on a whim, my original thought was to make this a slide only guitar. But seeing how cool it looks, it might be a shame to pigeonhole it.

If I make it slide only, I can use this '96 MIJ '60s reissue Strat neck that I've had sitting here for decades. My old guitar tech gave it to me when I was a teenager. Another customer of his had attempted to re-fret it and give it a compound radius, and ruined it in the process. The frets are gone in the high register, with plenty of chip-out to go along with the empty slots. And the board up there was badly flattened. But it would work for slide. My intent all these years has been to remove and replace the fretboard with a new one, but it has been sitting here on the shelf for, quite literally, over two decades. Maybe I should just slap it on a slide guitar and call it good.

If I want it to be a regular guitar, I have the neck off of my '04 MIM Strat, which I have owned since new. It has never come off the guitar except for mods. I plan on putting a nicer Allparts neck on the guitar soon, so the guitar's original neck will be freed up. It's just a MIM neck, but I've made it nicer over the years. Sperzels, bone nut, fret work, polished finish. It doesn't have the 7 1/4" radius, which I really like, but at least it has vintage style frets, which I love.

Pickups – not sure yet. Things I have considered: Saturday Night Specials. Whole Lotta Humbuckers. Custom Custom neck and '59/C Hybrid bridge (for the slide option). DMZ 36ths, PAF Masters, or PAF '59s. EMG 57/66, or 66/66.

Can you mock it up with a black Pickguard?
    Oh no.....

    Oh Yeah!

Yeah, I tried black in the virtual builder. Didn’t like it. Looked a bit cheapo and typical. I’ll use a nice, classy looking real celluloid tort – not too light, not too busy, and not too red. Sometimes I laminate a black layer under tort to tone it down. Might do that here.

Agreed. Bone, cream, or aged white knobs!

^ I'm also not big on the way the knobs look in the mockup. The idea was witch hats, but they weren't available in the virtual Strat program, so I used speed knobs instead. Parchment knobs with double parchment humbuckers or black/parchment humbuckers is still an idea I'm thinking about. Tried Tele knobs in the program, but it was too much chrome. Even the covered humbuckers might go away in the end. Lots of bulky shiny stuff on a guitar that's otherwise pretty dark in tone.

Also, I'm not set on the classic vibrato either. The body is routed for one, but I might just block it with a piece of wood to make it a cheater hardtail.

I wish the program had the exact type of tort I want to use. Then you'd all see that it will look cool. I agree the guard doesn't look too hot in the mockup.

I'd like it better with a green or black headstock.

I agree with painted headstock. The green flame and the tort are competing equally right now.

I hadn't heard of a Custom Custom neck before, or even a Custom neck. Is that a custom shop order? Or a mod on something else?

probably a shop floor custom for the cc neck. hamer put out some guitars with a sh5n (custom ceramic magnet) and cc bridge. same pups, different spacing and magnets. not my favorite setup but it wasnt any where near as bad as i expected

A non-logoed SH-5/SH-11 will drop right in, right?
                    Oh no.....

yeah as long as the ring fits the pup, the rout should be fine

Re: New Idea for a Strat Build

Yup, some of these ideas have already crossed my mind. I am definitely going to try a black headstock. The good thing about lacquer over poly is that if you don't like the results, it's easy to remove the lacquer without a trace.

I'm talking about a regular Custom Custom in the neck position. Might be a nice and fat slide pickup there, and probably cool with a spin-a-split.

Some more noodling around in the program, some of it to satisfy y'all's suggestions.
