Not too bad for the upgrade. It’s the base cost that’ll get you.

    Oh no.....

            I guess you'd say it's a love-hate relationship.

Abalone is hit or miss for me. If it is subtle and limited to maybe fingerboard dots, I like it. But binding and huge inlays start to look gaudy quickly for me.

You should wash your mouth out with soap for speaking of OG Jackson in such a manner.

(Disclaimer: Nothing about Kiesel guitars appeal to me)

There's a custom shop Jackson with wood inlay for the logo. Looks amazing.

I think a brushed stainless steel logo would look great on a black guitar.

I like abalone. Its not fashionable to say so.

Abalone is no more gaudy than a bright red or yellow neon guitar. Yet there are people who absolutely love 80s guitars, yet claim abolone is "gaudy".

Abalone is no more "gaudy" than sleeve tattoos. I'm waiting to find someone with full sleeves who hates abalone. That person would be a living contradiction!

Abalone has a way of perking up the look of a dark guitar. Abalone is cool because its not white and its not black. If you have a light guitar, white binding doesnt work as well, and sometimes you don't want black. Its good that abalone is also an option.

Abalone was never that common, so when people see abalone binding, they don't think its "retro", they think its asian.

I think the real reason that abalone gets hate is because asian factories figured out how to trim mid-price guitars with it. Abalone is no longer exclusive, so its fashionable to hate on it. Doesnt mean its a bad look. If this was 30 years ago, an abalone bound guitar would have meant an exclusive instrument.

I don't know why I don't like it, but they certainly over-do it trying to class-up inexpensive guitars. I like things more stealthy and understated.

I'm a fan of those head shots! To me it makes sense to put something very standout like an abalone logo when it's just a plain headstock and body with flat colours. On black or white, it would really pop.

Add it on top of flame or quilt in bright colours with gold hardware and it still gives me a half chub, but it is distracting.

For my custom build (not Jackson) I am looking at abalone or Dichrolam combined with Luminlay for a single inlay spanning frets 10-14, and mmmmmaybe that's it. That way it draws the eye in the light and dark.

Who am I kidding, I love gaudy, swirly, multicoloured stuff.

It's not gaudy if there is enough of it.

Some of my Jackson Stars use mother of pearl for the headstock logo. I think it looks flashy enough, without being gaudy. That said, I really the ones posted in the thread too.
