Hello! This is a topic that not only me but some of my friends have problems with - the overwhelming amounts of Les Pauls Epiphone manufacturers. So naturally, picking the right one is a little difficult without help. So, I've narrowed it down. I'm trying to buy a guitar for my dad for his birthday (the big 60!) because he's wanting to do what I do - play guitar! I've decided to get him an Epiphone Les Paul Standard of some sort because of my luck with them. Could any of you help out? I'm in a mix between a Plustop Pro and the 50s. He likes his country and classic rock. Any suggestions?

It's a no-brainer for me...Plus top Pro in Desert Burst. (I actually have this guitar, and it is truly amazing looking, playing, sounding)! I like it soo much better than its $3k Gibson brother.Originally Posted by IanBallard

Re: So....Plustop Pro or Standard 50s??
The question is
Is he a big hand thick neck guy or not
Maybe he wouldn't notice if it were one or the other
I like the thinner necks
Some of my friends like the thicker ones
But he doesn't have much experience playing
He probably wont notice
Any of the standard ones work just fine
Try to get the Probucker pickups
Not the Alnico Pro
Shoot get him a Gibson
He's 60 by the time he decides he ain't catching on
Hell just give it to you anyways
Get the one YOU would want
Its gonna be yours one dayEHD

Re: So....Plustop Pro or Standard 50s??
I own a PlusTop Pro (Trans Burst), and it's great. Neck is a slim D profile, which I vibe with. The heel is your fairly typical chunky Les Paul thing, but it might not matter if your dad is just starting to play and is probably not interested in shredding high up on the neck.
Neck profile is probably the important thing. Question: does your dad have short fingers, long fingers, or medium? If he's got short fingers, you might not want to get him a guitar with a baseball bat neck, as it will be harder for him to play, especially as he's just starting out.

Re: So....Plustop Pro or Standard 50s??
That "Inspired By Gibson" 50s Standard pointed out by Synpsys gets my vote, too.
Medium profile LONG TENON neck like the R series Gibsons.
For $600 that's unbeatable IMO..

Re: So....Plustop Pro or Standard 50s??
Yup. The new one with the slightly better headstock is the way to go.
If they were available as plain tops, or in cool opaque colors, I would be getting one...and I already have a few Gibson Les Pauls.Originally posted by LesStratYogi Berra was correct.Originally posted by JOLLYI do a few chord things, some crappy lead stuff, and then some rhythm stuff.
