05 R7 GT pot?????

should the pots say "gibson" on the back? or "500 ohm"? the back of the pots are blank except for solder.the side of the pots has a number; 044-70501-0447.not absolutely sure about the last digit or two. reason i ask is i find the neck p/u tone brighter than my 02 std lp. i just got this git news years eve, and have since changed the p/ups to APH-1's to alleviate some of this brightness.it might be a "little" better.do new guitars have to be played for awhile to "mellow".BTW,i was unable to remove the knobs and pots due to lack of proper tools.also , my 02 std has burstbucker pros and the pots in that one say "gibson" on the back of them.any and all feedback is appreciated!!! IMO i feel i have to roll the neck p/u tone pot to 2 or so achieve a neck p/u tone.are these CTS pots?

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

John, i'm not familiar with that pot # but a 44070500 is a gibson 500k short shaft which that guitar should have. are you sure it says 501 and not 500? also, i'm pretty sure they are not CTS pots. as for will it warm up after time, maybe a bit but to be honest a bright guitar will be a bright guitar for quite some time if nothing is changed in it. perhaps a bunch of pickup changes may help to find the right ones but i don't see it getting much warmer over time alone. it may warm up a slight bit but i'm not too sure i buy into that when people say it. perhaps a lower rated pot in the 400K range may fatten up the neck a bit though before you start the great pickup hunt lol.

thanks mike, pretty sure on the numbers except for that last digit.according to gibsons website , the specs say CTS. should they say "gibson" though????

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

My '03 R7 has the exact same pots as your's, blank on the back and same #'s.

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

jump- did you ever have the original p/ups in it(BB1+2's)?how do find the wagners, specifically the neck p/up tone.mine seems bright to me.had BB1+2,now APH-1's

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

This guitar had the Wagner's already in it when I bought it. The neck doesn't seem overly bright in any way. It seems to be pretty even in fact, not too much bass or treble and the mids jump right out at you. I tried my Hybrid set in it a couple of days ago found that it was very similar as well, not too bright though brighter than the Wagner's. Have you played around with the neck height?

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

i set it to about 1/16" as "suggested" in dan erlewines book.i really haven't lowered it too much.my concern would be volume/output balance between the two p/ups.

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

My pots are the RS kits .. don't know have you heard of it.
I do'nt see a significant difference in the sound, either that or i'm tone deaf

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

i haven't tried the RS kits yet. it seems a lot of members here like them though.this R7 is kinda killing me .i keep comparing it to my 02 std lp ,which i happen to really like (the tone:BB PROS). i would like my R7 to sound more like that.is it possible to achieve or have i entered the endless p/up search???lets say i put BB PROS in it ,that doesn't mean it'll sound the same as my 02 LP,RIGHT?

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

I don't know man .. so far I find that this is all phychology. hahaha
but because the RS kits came with those nice capacitors and stuff, thats why I wanted to try it out ..

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

Just call up your favorite small parts guitar guy like blackrose/wymore or lew or kmc or any of the other guys here and ask to get a "matched set" of 500k pots. I did that and john was able to set me up with 4 that were right about 450 or so. Pretty close and that's all I wanted. You'll likely never get exactly 500.

Then it's time to play with capacitors. Just keep trying different caps until you get the one you want. But, use good quality caps, good quality pots.

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

It Was Suggested By A Very Trustworthy And Reliable Source To Try 250 Ohm Pots For My Bright Sounding R7.anyone?

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

You could try the 250k pots to tame the highs. Seymour uses a 250k pot with the JB in his tele-gib for the same reasons.

I would first change all of the pots to a matched set of CTS like Scott suggested. Don't know if it's the 57's qualities, but mine was overly bright with the BB 2 & 3. I went through a few variations untill I settled on a set of Seths, but probably would have changed the neck at least to an APH.

You should be pretty damn smooth with an APH in the neck...change the pots first.

Re: 05 R7 GT pot?????

already swapped out p/ups to APH-1's,believe it or not i think it still sounds bright.question, they're CTS's in there now, change 'em anyway?would'nt they be a matched set??? i also have the opportunity to "try" a set of antiquities, but i'll have to give them back ,or pay for another set.
