I guess it depends what you mean by high gain. My experience; Gibson LP Classic w/DD's -----> Tonebone Hot British -----> Fender Bassman '59 RI (pretty much cranked). Like you implied, nice tight low end & driving mids. I like it, I just dont think the 10" speaker get's the attention it deserves. I'd like to see a few more "hybrid" amps or cabs. Ya' know a 10 & a 12 or 2 10s & 2 12s, should work well in a high gain situation. Anybody else?

Peace,

Most of the amps I've owned were equipped with 12's. The Fender Prosonic (2x10), Hot Rod DeVille (4x10) I used to own, and the Super-Amp (4x10) I now own all use 10's. The Prosonic combo lacked a little bottom since the smallish cab only housed 2 10's, but the tone was very nice and full, and focused at relatively high gain (I'm not much on preamp over-saturation). It never seemed to muddy up like similar amps equipped with 12's do. The Hot Rod DeVille 4x10 sounds MUCH Better than the 2x12 version (IMO.....I've owned, and gigged both versions). The Super-Amp is also considered a 'high gain' amp since is has 2 stages of adjustable preamp gain, but not in the sense of, say, a Boogie. Think 'Bassman on 10'. Again, the tone is VERY full, and has a lot more bottom since the larger cab houses 4 10's.

I once played a Tonemaster head through a closed-back 4x10 cab, and the tone was rich, thick, and focused, with P-L-E-N-T-Y of bottom.

Hope the info helps.

Mike

i think 10s are more punchy but 12's do have a deeper bottom end. a 2x10, 2x12 cab would be killer
