Do you think a Greenback would fit in there?

ErikH or someone else who ownes these amp... could you try measuring for me?

No I won't buy a new Greenback speaker that costs more than the amp but I might get good deals on both seperately. So that's why I'm asking :)

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

Even if you could squeeze a 12" speaker in there (and I don't think ya can)...a GB would not be a good choice for a Lead 12..or any other SS older 800 series amp...

You wan't tight, and warm...without a spike in the highs or mids...from Celestion I'd say a G12H would be a better choice.

Lead 12s..as cool as they are, can get real shrill and fizzy..you gotta tame 'em a bit.

Not to hijack... but whats the deal with these Lead 12's? Good amps?

I'm looking for a bedroom SS amp to replace my Peavey Bandit 112, and I was thinking about either building a low voltage EL84 tube amp, or grabbing a small SS Marshall. Whats the deal with these Lead 12s?

they were pretty good little amps...... not bad sounding at all..... i owned one of the slightly larger versions as well, a Lead 30 back in the 80's...

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

I own a 1983 Lead 12, GREAT practice amp and it takes pedals really well. The "clean" sound is pretty decent too.

As for the speaker, it has a 10" so trying to get a 12" speaker in there would be a tight fit. The stock speaker is actually pretty good anyway. FWIW, using an MI Audio Crunch Box into the clean input is total 80's Metal, and boosting the dirty input with a Tubescreamer is about as close as you can get to a cranked Marshall stack at bedroom levels, IMO. The only issue with the amp is the input jacks, they go bad every couple of years.

Cheers,

CJ

You could always build a a larger cabinet, large enough to stick in a 12", and transfer the head portion over. Or Build a seperate head cab, and a seperate dedicated 12" speaker cab.

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

I am almost positive it will not fit.

Also, FWIW if you want to run a Lead 12 into a 12 inch speaker the Greenback is not the best choice...

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

It won't fit, end of story. And like said, it won't sound good with that amp. They need a warmer speaker if you're looking to change it at all. I'm quite fond of the stock Celestion myself but through a nice closed-back 4x12....look out, brutha. That sucker will hang with the big boys and not hickup.

EDIT: And here's why it won't fit:

Baffle height: 12 inches
Baffle width (inside the piping): 11 3/8 inches

What I did is I cut the wires from the amp to the speaker and on the amp side installed a 1/4" jack, on the speaker side a 1/4" plug. When I want to run it through my cab, I just unplug the speaker and plug in the cab. If I had an insulated jack, I probably would have mounted it where the wires come out of the chasis. I may still do that at some point anyway.

Not worth the effort. Besides, you'd have to redrill & make a mess of things. Use it for what it is, rather than trash it or sell it out to get a different speaker.

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

Thanks for the replies!

Good to know that it won't fit and that it wouldn't sound good either. 12" replacements are out then.

Well, I might mod it with a speaker jack in case I get it. I might also stick with the original speaker. I trust ErikH's oppinion and heard the clips he had over at soundclick and it sound really good like it is. But I won't say anything definitive before trying it out in real life first. But we can always discuss it further whatever happens ;)

So, would a "G10 Vintage" be a good replacement for the stock 10" or do you have a better suggestion?

MVI, imo it would be worth the effort in case you like modding stuff and get a good speaker on the cheap. I never take on things that I know that I can't get a proffessional end result on. But in case a 12" would have fit I would seriously consider modding it. Since I enjoy woodworking and know that I could have made a good looking non trashed amp. Then again I'm ridiculously picky when it comes to finish and details as some of you guys know ;)

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

I wouldn't even think about modding these amps that way, other than the plug/jack on the speaker wire. Their resale value is skyrocketing so any serious mods will only hurt the resale. Trust me on that one. I snagged mine for less than $100 from JeffB but I've seen 'em on eBay go for $200 or more recently.

Re: 12" Greenback crammed into a Marshall Lead 12 (5005)

Wow! seems I got a good deal then.

I bidded one in today for 90$ + shipping. :D

No serious mods to this one then! As said, maybe a speaker jack and maybe a speaker change but in that case I'll save the stock celestion ;)

I knew that people have started getting their eyes up for these but 200+ :11: Thanks for the heads up on that ErikH!
