12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

Guys, is there a Floyd style 12" locking nut anywhere ? I need one for a 12" radi guitar i'm having floyded. Any help would more than appreciated, as I'm thinking a 10" would be too much of a mismatch, and the 14" ones stew-mac supposedly sells would as well...

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

I wouldn't worry about it, honestly. There're innumerable guitars with a slight mismatch between fingerboard/fret radius and bridge/nut radius. For instance, almost every production ESP with a Floyd has a 12" fingerboard/frets and 10" radius nut, and they play just fine.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

I wish ed's site was true, but after research it's a typo. If the 10" will work real good with 12" for sure, I guess it would have to do. I'm putting on a Gib. Les Paul Studio, so I think I need the R4 ?

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

I wonder what Gibson uses on their Axcess model? It's very odd that at this point, there aren't 12" or flatter nuts easily available.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

Floyds only come in 10". I believe the gotoh/Ibanez style locknuts are 16". I have no idea why they don't make a 12" as it's probably the most popular fretboard radius.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

You will be just fine with a 10, as the thousands before you.

Nuts Metric
Nut #1 - Neck Width 1-9/16" - 10" radius 39.7mm
Nut #2 - Neck Width 1-5/8" - 10" radius

41.30mm
Nut #3 - Neck Width 1-11/16" - 10" radius 42.90mm narrow string spacing
Nut #4 - Neck Width 1-11/16" - 10" radius 42.90mm wide string spacing
Nut #5 - Neck Width 1-3/4" - 10" radius 44.45mm
Nut #6 - Neck Width 1-9/16" Bullet - 10" radius 39.70mm Nut #1 w/clearance cut for 70's style fender truss rod adjustment nut (Bullet style)
Nut #7 - Neck Width 1-5/8" Bullet - 10" radius 41.30mm Nut #2 w/clearance cut for 70's style fender truss rod adjustment nut (Bullet style)
Nut #8 - Neck Width 1-11/16" - 10" radius 42.90mm
Nut #9 - Neck Width 1-11/16" - 15" radius 42.90mm - Nut #8 with clearance cut for 70's style fender truss rod adjustment nut (Bullet style)
Nut #10 - Neck Width 1-11/16" - pending 42.90mm

So for a gib les paul Studio, will a R4 be close to the edge, and need an R3 ? or is R4 placed perfect ?

My Gotoh is a 10" radius.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

I've used the 10" radius nut on many guitars, from everything from Fender Strats, to Gibsons, and everything in between. It's fine.

I absolutely guarantee you, that you won't even notice. Not to mention the fact that the Floyd itself has a 10" radius, anyway.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

I found conflicting info on the radius, but I can check the actual nut later tonight.

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

Jackson has used a 12-16" radius since the beginning (except on the few CS models that had the more traditional Fender/Gibson radii). The standard Floyd/Schaller R2/R3/R4 nuts work fine with a 12" radius. All you need to do is match up the string spacing you want. R2 should be 1 5/8", R3 should be 1 11/16", and R4 should be 1 11/16" with wider string spacing at the nut (for that near-Classical feel).

Yes, I would be getting a floyd orig. 10" at the bridge. but would shim it for my 12" l. paul radius... I want it as perfect as can be at the bridge.

Dr.Newc (or anyone else) - should that be R3 or R4 for a non bound Les paul studio ?

Anyone know ? would R3 or R4 both feel good on the paul ? I onticed on the les paul axess guitars, they use R4, and those are bound necks too(mines unbound les paul studio),,,,

Also, I'm looking at getting the Gotoh floyd, which I believe is 16"(or is it 14)? radius at the bridge ? that wouldn't be hard for a tech to shim that to a 12 (I guess shim the middle saddles some) to get it perfect, would it ?

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

Why not a Kahler locking nut? Keep the original LP nut in place and just add their locking device behind the nut?

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

Because the kahler locking nuts aren't so good, and introduce friction

Re: 12" radius locking nut ANYWHERE ?!

kahler's nuts are ugly

I think its to match their tremolos
