12'' speaker vs 10'' for bedroom level chugging..

Right now I have a 12'' speaker in the combo I'm using, which I plan on selling to get a smaller tube combo, with a 10'' speaker. What I'm worried is that the POD I use through the current combo won't sound as good with a 10'' speaker at similar volumes. Will I notice much difference, especially for chugging and heavy riffing?

I believe you'll lose some of the lows that come from heavy palm muting.

If I dial in more bass then it'd compensate directly, or would the sound still be a wee bit thinner?

I'd actually TRY it if only any of the shops had 10'' speakers or PODs that are moveable to plug into cabs...

You will notice the difference. The 10" speaker would sound tighter/narrower. Although you can still have that "chug," you won't feel the deeper bass vibration that you get with a bigger speaker. Sometimes, compensating the size by increasing the bass would just make things muddy on a smaller speaker.

I think 10's are ideal. They don't sound as natural as the 12's but you still get pretty good chug In my opinion.

I think that in some cases it's easier to get 10's into a full resonant vibration (on strings A and up...) without waking up the house.

Just for the Record I use a 4x10 guitar cabinet and I have a 1x12 combo..I USUALLY preffer the 4x10. Both Live and in recording. Maybe I'm just weird though.

I think that it depends more on the actual speakers that you get than the size . . . lots of bass players use 4X10 cabs and they usually get tons of low end!

What about going the other direction? I'm looking into getting a keyboard combo with a 15" and a horn for monitoring my PODxt and Bass PODxt. I'm not worried about the bass tones, but will my guitar tones tend to woof/flab out?

Maybe you should get Roland JC120 instead then. It's not a tube amp, but it has nice clean channel that you can use with your POD, keyboard, guitar, etc.
