so ive always been a six string metal guy. im looking to pick up a double neck with a 12 on top. what pups sound good in a twelve? are they the same type of humbucker as a 6? i want a warm fat sound on the neck and a bright crisp sound on the brindge. ive never ventured into the twelve string electric guitar world.

If you want that 12 string jangle you might want to look at T. V. Jones.

I like a Jazz set for the 12 string. Open, chimey, and beautiful cleans. You can bump up the bass in the bridge by going to a 59.

Re: 12 string electric guitar pups?

My BC Rich Perfect 10 Bich (10 strings... set up similarly to a 12-string but the low E and A are singles) came stock with Duncan Designed HB-102s which, after looking 'em up on the S-D site, are a JB/Jazz combo made overseas. They're bright, but not overly so. The guitar itself is mahogany body & thru-neck with a rosewood board but I really think the brightness comes from the extra strings. This combo is considered a medium-to-high output, but it doesn't sound muddy to me at all.

My 12 has a rio grande muy grande for tele. It really has a bit too much output for my taste.

Re: 12 string electric guitar pups?

the guitars is a bc rich bich double kneck. im a big SD fan. the six string side will most likely be getting a dimebucker in the bridge and some kind of warm fat bassey pup in the neck. not to sure yet. but iw asnt sure if there were special pups for a twelve string being theres an extra 6 strings. then again you play them two at a time so i suppose that was a stupid assumption lol. id like to stick with seymour duncan. when i find a quality product that hasnt failed me i like to stick with them. also this guitar features a ton of fasers and effects built in. it has the duncan designed hb-103 pups in it. im not familiar with the duncan designed.

1 mini reverse phase, 1 Varitone knob. anybody familiar with these controls? like what does a revere phase and the varitone do?

Re: 12 string electric guitar pups?

Reverse phase means it switches the phase of one pickup, to get a thinner sound. Varitone basically changes the value of the capacitor on the tone knob, so that you can tweak the frequency cutoff.

My Perfect 10 has the same controls.

The reverse phase is used with the pickup selector in the center position (both HBs on) and essentially runs one of them in reverse, giving sort of a wah-ish twang to the sound.

The varitone has 5 positions... first is without any filtration whatsoever and the other four are increasing amounts of capacitors giving muddier sound as you go.

I find the phase reverse to be a fun effect for my 6-strings, but I don't like it on the 10. The varitone is (unfortunately) a rather poor design. There is a .022uF cap in the tone control (which gives plenty of variation IMO), so the other cap values introduced by the varitone just serve to make mud. Most of the varitone designs I've seen use the varitone to switch cap values on the tone control (like jtougas mentioned above), but this one just piles an extra one on top.

Re: 12 string electric guitar pups?

I wanted to put jazz's in my G-1275 12 string and ended up using a 36th anniversary set I had laying around. It's a very nice sound compared to the stock pickups. It's like. Blanket was removed from the sound.

Re: 12 string electric guitar pups?

I didn't get on with Jazzes in my G-1275, and opted for their APH-1 A2 counterpart. The bridge position was far less fussy than the neck, which seemed to suffer too much low end with 490R, Jazz, wide range, 57's, and probably a few other I've forgotten.

Using plain octave strings in the lower pairs has made a big difference recently, so maybe some of the boomy neck pups I'd dismissed would actually work now.

Which string set do you use? I would love to try them :)
