15" Speakers?

I´d like to hear opinions on 15" speakers with guitar amps. I got offered a VibroClone (a bandmaster head turned into a combo with a 15" speaker).

I´ve never played a 15", so any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Re: 15" Speakers?

I personally love 15" speakers in fender type amps. It takes the Hi-fi fender sound and drops it down to low-fi. While this might sound bad to some people, it gives a fender a less brittle sound in some respects. Rounds those highs just a bit (depends on the speaker of course) and fattens up the lows a bit. Gives the lows a more percussive thump because of the increased speaker area.

I think it sounds more old-school blues with a 15" speaker. I'd personally be all over that amp.

Re: 15" Speakers?

15" Speakers can be real nice with the right amp. IF yoyu have lets say a 30W amp and you are having some issues with headroom a 15" Speaker can help this quite a bit. I'm not sure if its the size or the added wattage of the speaker that helps this. Some of the amps I have had some time on that came with 15" speakers are the Fender Dual Showman Reverb. This is essentially a Twin in a head and the stock bottom had 2 15" speakers in them. The bottom on these amps was very powerful and thes amps were very loud yet very clean.

Another great amp that had a 15" was the BF Vibroverb. SRV used these for a while. They are 40W amps that had these 15" speakers in them depending on the year Fender used different speakers. JBL D-130, Jensen C15N, or CTS 15" ceramic. This is/was an awesom sounding amp. Listen to SRV soul to soul and you will hear vibroverbs all over that record.

Blues cats are famous for using low wattage 15 inch speakers with class A amps.

Oh and I forgot,

the speaker is a ceramic Weber California 15".

The weber Cali 15 is suppose to be a replacement for the old JBL D130 (But not the JBL D130F, which is a bass speaker).

It will work quite fine!

You might consider having the amp checked out to ensure that the transformer and caps are up to snuff.

An upgrade to a MOJO or Mercury Magnetic trans will help.

Re: 15" Speakers?

Is the weber a low voltage speaker? I used to hang out at a blues club where the "house" amp was an old low wattage silvertone amp with an old low wattage 15 inch speaker. It had a voice like gregg allman.

Re: 15" Speakers?

i had my bassman plugged into my friend's 1x15 cab and it sounded awesome. probably the best sounding cab i've plugged the bassman into.

Re: 15" Speakers?

At a local guitar show I played a Fender Twin Reissue Custom 15 and i found that the top end was a bit brittle (couldnt put the treble past 3) and the low end push was very big (for telecasters and jazzmasters) and that there was barely any mids and i take it this was because of the 15" speaker. Although it still sounded good it just wasnt worth the price in my opinion.

I could me mistaken, but I thought those amps were voiced and designed as a Keyboard amp. Not sure though, but that would xeplain its brightness.

Re: 15" Speakers?

The Weber Cali can vary tonewise quite a bit depending on the dome style---aluminium for the JBL 'calling all dogs' highend vs paper or screen mesh for a much more balanced tone. The best 15"'s I've ever used were the early 70's Celestion G15-75/80 series or original Jensen C or P15N's...most other stuff is too bright or too dull for my tastes.
