18 watt tube enough?

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

seriously, if it's not loud enough, the band is playing *WAY* too loud. I play with an 18 watt amp through a 2x12 (Dr. Z Maz 18 through a Z Best 2x12) and I barely turn it up a hair past halfway to play in six piece bands, let alone trios.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

thanks, m8. That's why I wa sthinking of going for the 18 watt. It seems like it'd be easier to crank it without pissing off tons ofpeople.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

it's the perfect wattage for getting real power stage overdrive in a smallish room band jam situation.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

+1. I play my 18 Watter with a MiniMASS turned down to about 1/4 power most of the time. I can't imagine ever needing more. Small tube amps rock.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

I play thru an 18 watt Sommatone (marshall clone) with a MiniMass as well. It can keep up in live situations no problem. I've owned all kinds of amps over the years and I found that either they were too loud and impractical, or they werent loud enough and couldnt hang. The 18 watt amps are "just right". I think you'll be happy with the Ceritone.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

My 18 watt TMB has no problem keeping up(played through 2x12 cab). The only time it has been an issue is when someone new sits in and has a higher wattage(40w plus) amp. IMHO, it's perfect for small jams when you want beautiful pure tube overdrive.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

dude, thats all you need, just run two in stereo when you gig. Simple, sttraight forward.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

if super clean tone is part of your sound, then 18 watts probably won't provide enough headroom for you to stay clean the whole time. but if you're going for an overdriven sound, then no worries!

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

some 18 watt amps are very loud, and I'm a big fan of small amp tone

however, I thought the Marshall 18 watter (the hand wired version) was mushy in the bass

other amps, like the 65 Amps London, have overcome this problem by using beefy transformers, so it depends on how the Ceriatone is wired

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

I was looking at the ceriatone 18 watt marshall clone. I jam with a drummer and bass player a few times a week and use a 50 watt SS amp. It's just loud enough to cut through. I haven't used a tube amp in probably 5 years. Do you think this would be loud enough cranked?
IIRC, typical tube amp ratings are for continuous wattage, not peak wattage... I think peak wattage can go as high as your transformers will allow.
All I know is that my little Princeton clone with a 212 cab is loud as hell cranked.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

With my 1x12 Mesa Loanstar Special has 5/15/30 watts settings. I could get away with 5 watts if I had to but I usually use the 15 watt mode turned up a little less than half way. That's playing in a medium sized club....

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

I know from experience that the Mission Amps 18 Watt Aurora will keep up and then some. Heck, it's loud enough to be heard really well throughout a large convention hall. Just ask Lew.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

I use an 18 watt Fender Super Champ for a broad range of different gigs. The master volume rarely goes over 5. It's loud. Put a 57 in front of it into a good PA, and it's huge. I notice I'm in good company here in the SDUGF 18 watter club!

Cheers.............................wahwah

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

all i know is a 5e3 deluxe tweed, which had great tone, just was not loud enuf for me.How many watts do they have? I was even using a very efficient red fang speaker. I get deluxe lovers all the time telling me the deluxe tweed is loud enuf.Maybe for recording but fr a small room It aint loud enough...I think The 5e3 tweed deluxe is 15 watts. Maybe 18 watts is that magical number up from 15 watts where its loud enough, but it would be pushing it in my estimation. I wouldnt even try. I say NO! 30 watts its where you wanna be.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

I have an 18w tmb w/a 1-12 cab and it's loud enough for a small gig.

Curly is correct in that there are a few variants to the design (see 18watt.com) and that makes a difference in tone headroom. I often wish I had a 2-12 to run mine through for a bigger sound.

As for the Deluxe-that's an early breakup amp, so I'm really not sure that it's always good to assume that wattage = usable volume. Vs. the Z, that's a sweet 18 watter, but it's much cleaner and has much more headroom than the marshall 18watt (1974) design.

That said, the Marshall 18w is a great little amp-nice breakup at decent volumes, but a bit flabby when dimed-mine is at least, so I keep it at 7 and jam just fine.

If you do get one, get a nice 2-10 or 2-12 cab and you'll be ok volume wise. Beyond that, mike it, or have everyone turn it down a bit.

Re: 18 watt tube enough?

An oft-overlooked advantage of small tube amps their care & feeding is cheap. They are loud enough for casual jamming and small gigs (even big gigs, miked).

What's the alternative? A 50- or 100-watter with an attenuator. If you're jamming 2 or 3 times a week, you'll going through output tubes fairly regularly. So, do you want to be buying a pair of little EL84's, or a quad of big-bottles?

Small tube amps rock, on the cheap.
