Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

Would you guys please estimate what you think the value of this guitar is. Just curious.

Thanks

It is from 52....it is more than "nice"!
The neck has been refinished when they fixed that headstock it seems!
Ah he pointed it out with the neck...

My first guitar teacher (back in 1973) had one of those as his everyday player.

Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

I can't see the auction right now...

Does this one have binding and/or the screws in the corners of the pickups?

I remember passing on a 52/53 several years back because I thought $7K was too much money...

Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

Yeah it has binding, and no, it's got the P90's (obviously) with no screws in the corners.

That's one hell of a guitar. Surely quite troublesome to play with that set up, but none the less, wow. Really good to see such good quality pictures of a real early original LP.

Thanks for posting the link!

I think that you can use it as a lapsteel guitar, look at that action!

The action is so high because he's got it strung up incorrectly. The strings were supposed to go under the bridge on those early LPs. (The bridge was designed by Les for the strings to go on top, but when implemented by Gibson, was installed incorrectly). Some of those old Lesters have had a neck reset, which allows the strings to be installed over the bridge.

It looks like the headstock veneer has been refinished (do to the headstock break), but other than that, I can't find anything.

Gibson did the neck set angle wrong. There's 3 "fixes" for this. One, wrap the strings under the TP- it's how you see most of them. The problem is you can't do any sort of palm muting. Two, reset the neck- it's messing with a vintage guitar- however, if it's had a headstock repair- the game's afoot- you're only improving the guitar at that point. Three, mill down the bridge so that the bridge sits closer to the body. If'n it were me, and I had a guitar like that- I'd get a replacement bridge, have it milled down and be a happy little boy.

Do you think that you could mill the bridge down (on a replacement/custon bridge) enough to get a decent action?

I'm just wondering how much you could lower it, given the position of the two nuts securing the bridge.

This isn't intended to be critical of your idea/thinking Golden Boy, I'm just curious if it could result in a "decent" action.

The photographer certainly did a great job.

Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

Nice relic! haha...my 1st Lp was a gold top with P90s. I paid 500 bucks for it back in the 70s. I was'nt gear savy and played loud through some huge Ampeg with 4 12's. I could'nt get the sound I wanted, figured it must be the LP so I took it to a shop, and traded it for a 'newer' 70 LP Custom. I walked out happy...but I bet the shop owner was thinking dumb kid.

Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

I can't figure out why people don't consider those really early Gibsons that valuable. I think they're beautiful instruments and I like the nonconventional tailpiece (which is probably one of the main reasons why they're not more popular). Certainly seem more reasonable than a '54.

Re: 1952 les paul on ebay

the problem with the early, pre-1954 instruments is that they are nearly unplayable. the tailpiece issue is well known, but it is not the only problem. the headstock angle is too low, which makes the strings feel like spaghetti...
