hey guys
i need ur advice!!
ive come across a 1972 gibson les paul custom that i can buy for approx. 1450USD

the only prob with the guitar is the finish on the body. it seems the owner has tried to repaint a couple of sections, thus causing the area around the tailpiece and between the knobs to look a bit wrong

but otherwise, the colour is aweomse. its white, but its now aged to become a bit yellowy - which is nice :)
Its also got duncan pickups in it - a 59 in neck, not sure bout bridge
hes replaced the tuners with schallers, but he can give me the original ones too

what do you guys think about this deal? is it worth it?

and what makes the Custom different to other Les Paul models?

thanks
Ishan

NO! I've got an excellent 1973 Custom I'd sell for $1400 plus shipping. $1450 is too much for one with finish issues.

2000 Australian dollars remember folks ;)

les paul customs retail for about 4-5000 here

Finish issues, replacement tuners and non-original pickups?

Tell him $1200 and you're doing him a favor.....

+1

If it was stock, and just had average playwear maybe. But $1200 is reasonable if the finish issues aren't that serious. And judging the seriousness of them isn't something you can do via pictures...

Re: 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!

finish issues and non original things are fairly large issues for that money. personally, i would keep looking....

Re: 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!

1450 USD is a lot for that guitar and I would not expect to pay more than 1100 USD and that is being generous given the condition and what has been changed. I would recomend that you pass on this one unless the guy can come down substantially to nearer to the 1000 USD mark.

Re: 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!

Changing the finish on guitars is ruinous for a guitars value.

Re: 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!

A bad refin makes it worth about $1000 max IMO unless it is a killer, then all bets are off.

Re: 1972 Gibson Les Paul Custom!!!

IMO, As a rule a 1972 Gibson ANYTHING is not up to par, quality wise rto a point that I'd pay anyware NEAR 1450.00 for it! Were it me, I'd say the buck stops at 1000.00...and make him go get a set-up done on it! For that kind of money, you can get tons of nice guitars...all that said, if it speaks to you, and you have 1450.00, OVERPAY!!! I overpaid for a guitar one time, it was a 1983 Gibson Moderne, the price was 1750.00, after I played it...my only question was: "do you take cash my good man?" The guitar just spoke to me...The guitar is now worth far more that I paid...and I will never sell it! A good guitar is a good find, a great guitar can be a friend for life.

hey guys
thanks heaps for your comments!!
i think there will be too many risks involved with this purchase - i might go and give it a try and see if i can get it for like 1000US, if not, ill just walk away

thanks for your help!!

I don't think $1100 is out of line. Hey, that's what they're going for, even the ones with finish issues. Gibson, regardless, of what they were doing company wise, was still using really decent wood for those puppies. Hey, worse case scenario, if it plays like a demon, buy it and have it refinished.
