What model Hums were first marketed and was plastic or wood spacers or both used in the first year of production?

What were the exact model names of the SD HUM PUP or PUPS in this first year of production?

"The JB Model", "The JM Model", "The 59" and "The Van Halen Special? Or Something else?

Maybe you find this to be helpful and you can quite posting the same threads over and over again.

This thread contains a scan of a very early 80's Seymour Duncan catalog.

Please let this be a lesson to you, actually 2...

Lesson one...Using the search function can not only get you the answers you seek but it can also help prevent you from driving other forum members crazy.

Lesson two...There was NO EVH/78 pickup being marked by SD in the time frame you are talking about.

The pickups listed in this catalog are:

SINGLE COILS

STL1B-Broadcaster Lead
STR1-Vinateg Tele Rhythm
SLT1-Vinateg 54 Lead
STL3-Quater Pound Tele Lead
STR3-Quater Poound Tele Rhythm
STL2-Hot Tele Lead
STR2-Hot Tele Ryhthm
SSL1-Vintage Staggered Strat
SSL1L-Vinateg Staggered Strat Left Handed
SSL3-Hot Strat
SSL4-Quater Pound
SSL2-Vintage Flat
SSL6 Custom Flat
SSL5-Custom Staggered Strat
SSL5L-Custom Staggered Strat Left Handed
STL2T-Hot Tele Lead Tapped
STL3T-Quater Pound Tele Tapped
SSL3T-Hot Strat Tapped
SSL4T-Quater Pound Strat Tapped

HUMBUCKERS

SH1B-'59 Model Bridge
SH1N-'59 Model Neck
SH2N-Jazz Neck
SH2B-Jazz Bridge
SH3-The Mag
SH4-The JB Model
SH5-Duncan Custom
SH6-Duncan Distortion
SH7-Seymourizer II

Notice, NO Mention of a EVH or 78 pickup anywhere.

Also notice that the numbers go in order and this catalog is from the early 80 and they were already up to SH-7.

If you are looking at an early 80's catalog and there is NO mention of an EVH/78 pickup then there is NO WAY they were making and marketing it in the late 70's...if they were it would still be listed here or there would be a break in the numbering system.

Also, before you start with your conspiracy theories reguarding the 2 pickups oyu see listed that are not still mentioned in the Duncan Line up, the SH3 The Mag pickup was renamed Stag mag years ago and the SH7 Seymourizer II is now known as the Duncan Distortion Neck version.

Here is the catalog, look for yourself.

Since there is NO mention at all of an EVH/78 pickup, please consider the matter closed. Seymour did NOT market an EVH/78 pickup in the late 70's...it just didn't happen.

Check for yourself.

I already posted this catalog days ago...and said the same..there is not a mention of EVH ...but this was a post 70s catalog!

However, Supposedly, in the guitar player magazine ad there was a Special Van Halen PUP adveritsed by SD, and most likely that was the pre catalog days as this scan seems to be the first catalog in published in 82 I believe..

Thanks for posting the same thing again, good try though!

FYI Please read this taken from a 1979 interview!

EVH: Yeah. And also, him selling it and advertising, makes it seem to the fans like I'm selling myself. They don't know that I'm against it. They think that I'm out for the bucks. That's not it at all. So it's kind of a drag. There's another guy too...See, I've rewound my own pickups before, and a guy named Seymour Duncan, I got pissed at him too. He called me up and said, "Can we use your name for a special pickup?" And I said no. Next time I pick up Guitar Player magazine, there's a special Van Halen model customized Duncan pickup. I called him up and said, "What the hell's goin' on?" So he stopped finally. It's just kind of weird you know.

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

The issue seems to be - In a 1979 interview Eddie VH claimed that he saw an ad in Guitar Player for a Van Halen model Duncan pickup. So, looking at an early 80's SD catalogue does not necessarily address the issue.

So what's the consensus of opinion - did EVH imagine it ?

I'm going to go on record and say a big fat WHO CARES!!!!!!

And everyone knows Eddie drank like a fish and it was the 70's so he was probably toked up most days.

Seriously, can you give this a rest?
What exactly is your point?

I'm pretty sure no one here cares.

Maybe you can email Seymour and company directly and continue this conversation with the people who were actually there?

Thanks
MM

You are correct! For now, I believe the consensus is only opinion and a who cares attitude from others!

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

I was only pointing out that you did have an interesting (to you) question and that some (not me) might have some recollection of the interview and might like to comment. Personally I don't care. I think EVH is vastly over-rated although I can imagine how people felt when they first heard him. I've expressed my opinion about EVH in various posts. I didn't listen to Van Halen at all until quite recently and although some of their stuff is good fun the songs on the whole are very poor and I found it very difficult to listen to most of them all the way through. I've also read several interviews with EVH and frankly, to me, he does not come across at all well. An obnoxious jerk about covers it. Just my opinion though.

I can't believe I missed this thread until now...

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

Well, at least the post count is still on 131.

Funny how that happened at about the same time as Rob posted, "time out for our new member" in one of the other threads. :scratchch

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

I feel like this issue has been beaten to death. Then dug up from its grave and beaten some more. Then a necrophiliac came along and defiled it some more.

Is it so unreasonable to assume that if (and I do say IF as this is purely conjecture) SD was marketing the EVH (Evenly Voiced Harmonics) pickup, that Ed himself could have seen an ad for it, and assumed that EVH stood for his own name instead of what Seymour intended it to stand for?

When several people prove you wrong it's past the point where you should have given it a rest.

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

One thing I feel about that initial offering by Duncan is that I'd be happy with everything on it, with no need for anything else. Just like Gibson and Fender, Seymour nailed it the first time around.

Everything else is just filling in blanks that I'm not sure needed to be filled in, except for the fact that guitarists are an anal bunch who demand more.

Re: 1978-1979 SD PUPS first marketed HUMS

Why do you insist on finding out exactly what was going on??

Who cares!!! Buy a pickup, put it into a guitar, buy a pedal of your liking, an amp of the same, and play guitar!
