1981 Gibson ES-335 Dot (cherry, first year reissue)

Priorities are changing and it's time to let a few pieces go. This 335 is amazing. And by amazing I mean amazing. This is the first year that Gibson reissued the 335 and these are said to rival the vintage 335's. This one certainly does. This was the 21st guitar of production, born on August 20, 1981 in the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo. It was stamped "SECOND" under the serial number. This was done to guitars which had a small cosmetic flaw which kept them from being sold as "perfect." This doesn't mean much as the guitar is now 30 years old and beautifully worn.

The guitar has normal wear for a 30 year old guitar. It once had a Bigsby installed so it has the snake bite by the strap button and two doweled holes in the top. The finish still has a lot of luster, checking around the perimeter, and some checking on the top and back. It has never had any breaks. The frets are original and in great shape.

The pickups are the original and coveted Tim Shaw designed PAF's which are regarded as some of the closest replica's of 50's PAF's. The guitar came with 300K pots which did the pickups no justice. I swapped the entire harness out for a BCS Guitars (Bourns 500K pots, Mojotone vitamin T caps, Switchcraft jacks & switch, cloth-covered wire) and the difference was equivalent to taking a blanket off of the sound of the guitar. It became clear, chimey, thick, and beautiful - absolutely perfect. The stock wiring harness will also be included with the sale.

The previous owner installed a graphite nut and a different bridge and tailpiece. These were all improvements, in my opinion.

A friend informed me that the case may not be original and may be from the 70's. I cannot verify this and am open to your opinions. It is a Gibson case with the logo, although very worn off, still visible.

You will no have no regrets purchasing this guitar. Zero. Zilch.

Asking $3000 shipped/PP'ed CONUS, no trades.

Note: I swirled out the serial numbers in the ninth photo to only show the first and fifth numbers (year) to discourage scammers.

Hey guys, just wanted to chime in for 1. a great seller and 2. I've played this guitar, and it is incredible.

There is absolutely NOTHING that is "2nd" about the action, playability, construction, or tone.

If there was a small cosmetic defect, I surely can't find it. And I'm a picky SOB.

Lublin,

You still looking to sell?
Would you ship it to Australia?

Re: 1981 Gibson ES-335 Dot (cherry, first year reissue)

This is an old thread .. but I have a 1981 Cherry dot reissue in mint condition that, if the price is right, I would sell.

If anyone is still looking, I would be glad to provide photos and other details.
