1x12 speaker suggestions - Celestion Gold??

Hi

I have a Laney LC50 1x12 combo - 5881 powered.

Looking for a speaker replacement - currently playing with a Celestion Vintage 30. I play in a covers band and record my own stuff. I need the speaker to be a good all-rounder; classic rock, blues and jangly rhythm stuff.

I find the Vintage 30 ok - but find it hard after 2/3 hours of playing.

Very confused by the number of options on the market. I've have considered the following options.

Jensen MOD 12-70
Jensen C12N
Jensen P12N
Celestion Alnico Gold

The Celestion Gold has got great reviews. I can afford it but I have always associated Celestion alnico speakers with a slightly boxy Brian May sound, as opposed to Richie Sambora classic rock for example. Will I still get a great rock sound with the alnico gold?? WIll the gold compliment a 1x12 combo with 5881 tubes??

Haven't considered eminence as I can’t find a UK supplier and they have too many to choose from.

I'm looking for help and advice.

All suggestions welcome.

i had a gold and it isnt a bad speaker but i traded it away for something i liked better.

there are a few eminence choices that are good, if you want celestion i say try the g12-65

Screamin' Eagle, Swamp Thang. I donno, I like the Vintage 30 - I like annoying speakers and tones.

How does your rig sound now? In what way (frequency wise) would you like it to change? More lower-mids, more bottom end, less highs? More highs, scooped?

If you don't like the Vintage 30 I woudl bet that you won't care for many Celestions at all but the G12-65 might be a good call since it rolls off some of the top, maybe the Can Rex from Eminence of you wanted a more traditional American sound maybe a Weber 12F150 or something similar.

Thanks for all your comments - will check out your suggestions of G12-65 and Cannibis Rex etc.

How does the G12-65 compare with the vintage 30?

How does the G12-65 compare with the vintage 30?

There isn't as much mids in a G12-65 and there isn't the mid-spike. In some applications the G12-65 can be thick, in some applications it can sound weak in the mids. It will allow you to add more mids to it through tube choices though.

It is a great speaker, but one speaker does not fit all situations and all ears.

There are other options somewhat like the G12-65, the Legend GB12, the Eminence ToneSpotter and the Warehouse Guitar Speaker ET65, also Weber has a speaker with the flavor of the G12-65.

The downside is the G12-65 is in high demand, kind of a darling speaker at the moment commanding a decent price. But, you deserve to try one at some time in your playing career. It may be Celestion's best if you find the V30 not of your taste.

How about Jensen speakers??
How do they compare with celestions??

I havent heard of many people using them in marshalls for example. Strange - havent heard anything but good reviews for the C12K.

Re: 1x12 speaker suggestions - Celestion Gold??

i dont really like the new jensens, they are ok but i think weber, celestion and eminence make much better sounding speakers. you dont see jensens in marshalls cause the jensen is a much more fendery speaker. different mids and top end that dont really compliment a marshall amp. i have a pair of jensens that i keep around as back ups, a p10q and c12n and they sit in boxes. i had others that i just had to get rid of since id rather borrow an amp than curse one of mine with speakers that sound like they did. weber makes the best 10"s ive ever heard but i prefer celestion and eminence 12"s. ive heard good things about scumback speakers to but haveny tried any myself.

bang for the buck eminence is hard to beat. i use a cannabis rex in my deluxe reverb and i love it.

Re: 1x12 speaker suggestions - Celestion Gold??

Hello Folks
I love the Celestion Gold and it is definitely one of the best sounding speakers in the industry. I have a shop in The Nashville area and have sold over 100 on Ebay.
Recently I had a customer blow one of the speakers it was obviously abused but I’m like Sam Wal take care of the customer and he’ll send you 10 more for treating him right.
Well when I heard back from Celestion they told me they could offer me another speaker for a whopping 25 dollars off of what I normally pay. I asked them about re-coning it and they said re-cone kits are not available??? What The Hell you’ve got to be kidding so if you blow one of your celestion Golds you’ve got a very expensive door stop. It’s really a shame that they just don’t get it in my 30 years of selling speakers I’ve never heard of such a dumb thing. So if your Celestion Gold is starting to get a bit Fatigued be prepared to buy a new one unless you want to drop some aftermarket Chinese kit in it.
I’ve decided not to sell them anymore because of their poor customer service I can’t afford to take care of my customers especially knowing now there are no re-cone kits available for such a fine Speaker/

Re: 1x12 speaker suggestions - Celestion Gold??

I have a Cannibis Rex in a 1x12 closed back cab and I love it. I also might consider a Screaming Eagle (the name is misleading). If you want more power, you can't beat the Swamp Thang.

Re: 1x12 speaker suggestions - Celestion Gold??

My latest customer paired up a Gold and a Celestion Lynchback in a 2x12 combo, EL34 powered. Sounded pretty dang good to me. I wired up the gold by itself and tested it out. Sounded pretty darned good to me. I have a Red Fang here and should have a/b'ed them. Didn't think about it.
