2-conductor to a 4-conductor conversion

OK, so I have this '59 that I want to use in a certain guitar but I need to be able to split it. I am thinking I can converit it to 4-conductor wiring by unwrapping the outer tape, seperating the coil wires that are soldered together and attaching leads to each. Am I understanding this correctly or am I out to lunch?
Thanks -Frank :)

nope you got it right, just be very very very careful. you can kill the pup pretty easy in there

WORD!!!!! I have done a number of these swaps and they can be tricky. I suggest being as carful as possible. Also, When soldering on the new wires, I always use a clip or something to act as a heat sink so you do not heat up anything too much. I wish I remember what they are called. They are sold at Radio shack. They are like little brass cloths pins in a way.

Odie, I´m assuming that you probably use forceps ("Lockable" medical tweezers w/ a scissor grip) like most others ;)

Nope, these are little brass clips that are like .75 inch long.

Re: 2-conductor to a 4-conductor conversion

Isn't this basically the same procedure as when I made a Hybrid? I took a 2 conductor 59 and used one 59 coil and 1 custom coil and soldered and taped the wiring and kept the customs 4 conductor wiring. Doesn't seem you could fry anything unless you werent careful with the soldering iron.

And now for my next question....where can I get me some o dat nifty 4-conductor wire? Lol. :D

Pretty much, dealing with the same wires.

Cool. Any chance these are standard SD colors? Doesn't sow the colors on the web site. Thanks -Frank

Re: 2-conductor to a 4-conductor conversion

Stew-mac stuff is all pretty much industry standard. I can't remember 100%, but I'd bet money on red-black-white-green . . .

Or you could take 4 wires, wrap them in shielding, and shrink wrap it!! (Don't . . . it always looks so messy . . .)

Re: 2-conductor to a 4-conductor conversion

If you don't need quite that much, GuitarElectronics.com has 5 feet for $4.50. I emailed them to ask what colors the wires were, but they never got back to me.
