2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT580 LP

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

Dealers may put whatever price they choose, but I'm not sure if they're subject to Minimum Advertised Price clauses.

If the post spacing is the same as an OFR, then yes, it can replace a JT590LP, since an OFR can replace it.

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

Are you sure it's a JT-590LP and not a JT-580LP? The JT590 is a Jackson-branded Schaller Floyd, and I wasn't aware they were ever made in a low profile (LP) version. The JT-580LP OTOH is a Takeuchi low-profile Floyd Rose that started appearing on Pro Series Jacksons in the late 90s. I've heard that they can be converted to a Gotoh Floyd, but I don't remember if any routing was required.

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

I thought that looked funny, but yeah, the 590 was the Schaller, same as if you bought a Schaller double-locking trem from StewMac. Recessed routes for 590s are too short for OFRs.

May I ask why you're thinking about changing the JT580LP? I've had two of them, and both have worked perfectly.

building a parts-jackson
just want to know what my options were, and i continually hear gotoh makes the best
but if a jackson-schaller-takeuchi-JP580/590/LP can be had for half- to a third of the cost, and is of high quality, then i'm definitely open to being persuaded

In terms of quality (starting with the best), I'd rank them as follows:
1. Gotoh Floyd
2. Jackson / Schaller JT-590
3. Jackson / Takeuchi JT-580LP

There's nothing inherently wrong with the 580, but it doesn't seem to be made quite as well as the 590 or Gotoh. It can also be a little difficult to find parts for them.

I prefer the tone of the older Takeuchi models where the bar screwed into the block. The later models sounded a bit thin to me (but then I'm not sure if they were Takeuchi - could have been Ping).

I have three Dinkys with JT580LP Floyd's, and two of them are fine, but one can't hold tune to save it's hide. So they can be hit and miss.

And as to the OP's question, here's a page with some good info about Jackson Floyds. It states that the 580LP rout is larger than an Original Floyd, so if the bridge you're looking has Original Floyd dimensions, it'll work. Also take note of the possible intonation issues with some swaps.

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

The price discrepancy is out there for many things–I would recommend the lowest priced option WITH the best feed back/reviews. As mentioned before, the Jackson tremolos can be hit or miss–I've had more misses than hits with them. Have had zero issues with Gotoh and Schallers so I would recommend either of those brands.

Best of luck with the build!

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

from what i've read so far, the big problem with the different models is some of the base-plates/knife-edges are mad out of hardened steel (good), and others are made out of zinc (not so good)

is there a way to determine one from the other? steel is magnetic. is zinc magnetic?

i also looked at that link, and the author seemed to think that a floyd manufactured by either schaller or takeuchi wasn't a guarantee of hardened steel base plate.

Well, I personally think Quality Control is what we are seeing here...I've played several tremolos with zinc that were excellent. I would assume that Gotoh and Schaller have a much higher QC threshold than some of the Jackson tremolos (especially the lower priced import trems.)

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

another issue was intonation when i replaced the JT-whatever-it-was on the DKMG with an OFR. i had to re-drill the holes accordingly. that's when i had access to a professional wood-working shop

it seems like a pivot post with a larger diameter contact point would help solve this problem
are there any posts like this?
do the wood screw posts have a larger diameter than the bushing/screw combo?

Re: 2 questions about Gotoh Floyd: 1. huge price discrepancy 2. can it replace a JT58

From what I've read here (can't find the thread), Jackson trems are Schaller copies and that MIGHT cause an issue with intonation as the Schaller Floyd has a 1/16" shorter mounting distance because the knife edges are farther forward and as such depending on which axe they're swapped for, this may or man not cause Intonation issues.

FWIW, I have a Swing EZ-10 where I swapped the SWING Schaller copy Floyd for a Gotoh GE1996T and although it works fine, the intonation screws extend beyond the route, check the lower E here:

.

Regarding the posts, the Gotoh uses threaded inserts in the body that are bigger than an OFR so a body drilled for OFR studs will not accept those inserts without drilling the holes larger. You can however use the Gotoh with OFR inserts and studs if you want.

I've been thinking that the Hollow Point replacement intonation screws would solve the above issue but they're a bit on the expensive side and I'm still debating whether it is worth it:
