2 Vol no tone pots question

I want to rewire my tele (phat cat neck , lil '59 bridge) so it has 2 vol's and no tone pots so i can do kind of a les paulish technique of switching on the gtr from a dialed down neck pup for "clean" sound and switch to a full throttle bridge sound with my single channel soldano 44.

i think i might want to add the "treble bleed" (i think that's what it's called) mod to the vol pots as well.

my main question is.. is there a need for any caps when not running tone controls? if so what are the "traditional" values for hot humbuckers with 500k pots & single coils or low output humbuckers with 250 & 300k pots?

any advice appreciated!

Re: 2 Vol no tone pots question

no, but you can put in a resistor to tame the tone a little. granted it will still be in a fixed position, but does help. i can't remember what type to use though. it's been a long time since i did this.

Re: 2 Vol no tone pots question

Go and help yourself to the Fender J5 signature T wiring schematic. The only difference between this and your instrument is that Mr.5 uses a Switchcraft toggle selector whilst you will be using a CRL lever type.

If you are going to change to 500k pots, they might as well be good quality ones. Something like the DiMarzio custom taper jobbies would do nicely. IMO, these also remove the need for treble bleed caps.

Re: 2 Vol no tone pots question

thanks very much for the info karpathion & funkfingers! i have always just wired my no tone gtrs with no caps & no problems! but thought I'd throw the question out there in case i was missing a secret tone ingredient ;)

i am definitely going to check out the the dimarzio custom taper pots if i don't have any of the right value resistors lying around for the treble bleed mod.
