2 way rotary switch?

Does anyone know if a rotary switch exists that is essentially 2 way?

basically I need a wire that goes into the switch & selects between 2 outputs:

INPUT > (switch) > OUTPUT 1 / 2

just plan on using it as an "add bridge pickup" to a strat & I would much prefer it was a rotary switch with a chickenhead knob instead of a push pull or a toggle switch etc.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

I believe that some 6-ways have adjustable stops to allow you to make it anything from a 2 to 6 way.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

There are such switches, but they're not common because most people use a toggle for 2-position operation. Look on Mouser Electronics' web site, I'm sure they'll have one.

Some rotary switches have more positions, but use a little locking pin or some such to limit their travel to a lesser number of positions. When you order a 2-position, they insert the locking widget in the correct spot, and ship it out. So, it may look like a 4- or 6- or 8-position switch, but only have 2 working positions.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

Thanks guys - i've never used a rotary before so i've no idea how the lugs/terminals are layed out.

I searched for "rotary switch" on that mouser electronics site & it came up with a billion of them.. oh man, lol.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

Thanks guys, i'l skim through those tommorow. Looks like a fair bit of info there.

For the FTL Drive pedal I built (see threads in Amp Central), I used a rotary switch that could be anywhere from 2 to 12 positions depending on where you set the locking pin.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

Just so I dont make a big mistake looking for the wrong ones - I assume (1 pole) means, 1 input to the switch - (2 pos) means 2 selectable outputs from each input & (bank/wafer) means seperate sections stacked on top.

so essentially, I need a [1 pole] [2 way] [1 bank] [make before break] rotary switch, with 9.5mm thread diameter & ideally a normall sized metal shaft.

right? heh.

Thanks guys.

You could also use a standard blend/pan knob. Spin it one way for one output, spin it the other way for the other output.

However, the mini-toggle will definitely be easier to operate and wire, just not as unique as the rotary.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

Yeah, I like to be able to operate my electronics very quickly & during play - so having to adjust a knob from one end to the other to remove the bridge pickup entirely is too much time for me & too awkward.

for me, a rotary switch is the neatest & easiest way to do it - I just cant seem to source one, hehe.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

If speed is the issue, why not a 2-way mini toggle? How about a push/push, since push/pull is out?

What about the Fender S1 switch/volume knob thingy?

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

mini toggles would be too small for the hole (i'm replacing the second tone knob - so I have master volume + master tone + bridge select)

push/push - probably a plausible idea, but i've never used one before - I dont know how they "feel" or how reliable they are. Plus i'd have to do something with the potentiometer itself I guess.

S1, pretty much the same reason + theyre not readily available (as far as I know).

Cheers for the suggestions.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

I've seen a few S1s on Ebay. Kinda high IMO, and not sure of their reliability.

I've had push/pushes, and they're easy to work. A bit stiffer than the S1, but you can nail them with the edge of your picking hand and go right back to playing, whereas with a push/pull you have to actually focus on pulling it up.

However, just don't do what I did and forget it's a push/push and think it's a push/pull - you can only get by with that mistake once. After that, it's a momentary switch

A Gibson-style 3-way should fit in the hole, or you can at least expand the hole to fit it, but then that also depends on how much clearance is at that end of the cavity. Ideally the switch would flip in the same line as the controls are, or at least towards the neck at an angle, but that means the body of the switch has to go side-to-side in the narrow end of the route.

Looks like the best route would be the rotary, though I'd hate to spend the money for something with so many options to only limit it to 2. Seems like someone ought to make a 2-position rotary and sell it for like $3 tops.

But then again, I've got a 6-way rotary and it's pretty huge - equal in diameter to a standard 3-way Gibson-style. Plus, it fits snugly in a 3/4" 3-way hole. Reaming the Tone hole might still have to happen.

Re: 2 way rotary switch?

thanks ugameus, I messaged the seller of those & none are 100% suitable for me, one of them is close though (the one you suggested previously) - I might go for the push/push or alternatively I found a really neat wiring scheme last night that blends the connections of bridge+neck which i'd actually quite like to try, I just need to change the scheme a little bit.
