$2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Well there are Martins that I like but they are way more expensive than I could afford. The Martins in the $1000-$2000 range just sound ok to me. But dosen't matter now.

Dear matt99camero,
Can you please get me a Randall RM100M1 please. I've been nice this whole year and got three A's and three B's in my report card, one of which is and Advanced Placement class. :6:

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Sorry I can't get you guys every thing you want, but I'll put in a good word for you with the fat man in the red suit.

The Taylor arrived in just two days. I have been playing this thing every chance I could get. It is an absolute dream to play. Flawless finish and set up perfectly. Compared to my Ibanez, well there really is no comparison. The tone is so much more balanced and it records a whole lot better. It dosen't have a whole lot of low end like a Martin, but I guess that comes with the smaller body size and any lack of low end it makes up for in playability. I love it!

sweet mang! Taylors are the awesome!

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Well I went ahead and ordered the Taylor 314CE and some other stuff. I've always loved it when I've played one and think I made the right choice. To be honest, I'm not very good at saving up for something, I'll find some other crap to spend it on, but if I have it hanging over my head and know I have to save for it I can. Plus my roomie is graduating in about 4 weeks and it may be the last time we ever play together and I just want this guitar to play our last gig. Seriously, I'm not worried about paying it off. I'm working my butt off at two jobs for something. I'll have money coming in at Christmas and graduation also.

Great choice Matt....I hope you enjoy that guitar. FWIW I've tried several different brands of strings on my 314CE, and the Elixirs really do sound the best. The only other brand I want to try is the Snake Oil's.

Have a blast and let us know when the guitar arrives...we want pics.

The consequence of a big bank preying on a naive 19 year old who couldn't resist bargain gear.

Well... those guitars weren't such bargains afterall.

Truer words were never spoken.

I was approved for $3000 credit limit at guitar center... Lol

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Just remember, bad credit does stink. You must have good credit to get the nicer things in life...house, cars...things that you just can't save enough actual cash up to get. However, you have to HAVE credit to GET credit. Use, use it wisely, and use it to your advantage...but you HAVE to stay on top of it.

Sounds like Matt knows how to do that. Less than 1/2 of 1 percent of all credit holding adults have a credit score above 750. Matt's is over 800. That doesn't happen by accident, or by just having limited credit.

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Nothing wrong with using a credit card to get what you want, IF you use it correctly. I bought my Mesa and Jackson and a couple other things with my Credit Card and my score is a sky rocket of 738.

So like Jeff said, you gotta have it to get it. Just be sure to do it wisely. I myself paid 1,000$ atleast on every statement that came in. So try to get it in large chunks.

Which credit score? The Big 3 have switched to the "Vantagescore."

Our Vantagescores are over 840. Somehow, my wife's is 23 points higher than mine:?:

What is really strange about that is that a couple of years ago she was late on a couple of student loan payments. I have NONE of those dings.

Yeah, this isn't my first time with a credit card. I think I'm up to about 5 or 6 cards total, but they don't have a balance on them except one which is about to be paid off. I've used credit cards to fund quite a bit of gear and other stuff, but the Taylor is my biggest purchase I've put on a card. I have only had one late payment and that was like my first or second payment on my first card.

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

Sorry to be chiming in so late here, but I'm the perfect person to respond in respect to the guitar dilemma (the credit card thing is all on you, I'm not even gonna pass judgment on that one!)

Anyway, here's the deal:
I have a 314CE, and my roomie in college had a 312CE and a Martin OMC that was very similar to the JC-16. The other guys hit this one right on the nose when they said stick in the 300 series. The difference in price doesn't make it worth it for the extremely subtle differences in playability, sound, etc. Just because it's 600 lower than the 900's does NOT by any means mean that this is low end stuff. The differences between the 314 and 312 were also very subtle, but you'd notice them. The 12 is a bit smaller around the waist as well as the depth of the guitar itself. It is a little better suited for fingerstyle than the 14. The 14 has a deeper, fuller sound to it. Both played exactly the same, necks seemed to be identical. I've always loved Taylor's necks.
I played a JC-16GTE for about 5 minutes at a shop yeeears ago, before I had really gotten into acoustics. I remember really liking it at the time, but again... I wasn't really that knowledgable in the acoustic world. However... (and I know the OMC series is about $500 less than the JC, but it's still a reference) I wasn't as impressed with his Martin. It sounded flat compared to the Taylor. Same Elixer nano's, just didn't seem to have any character to it.
In short, I think you'll be pleased as punch with the 314-CE. I found mine on Ebay (which I had told myself I would NEVER buy an acoustic on, but broke that rule and am SO glad I did) for under $900 shipped. I went overnight from being a now-and-then acoustic player to a fanatic. It has replaced my Les Paul as my most prized possession.

Re: $2000 to spend at Musicians Friend, what to get, maybe a Taylor?

To me there was not enough difference between the 314-Ce and the 414-CE to justify the difference in price. I bought the 314 and never looked back. My personal opinion was that until you got up to the 714 and higher range, the difference in quality wasn't substantial. I have really enjoyed my Taylor.

As for the credit card...just be careful. Credit can be a great thing, and is very necessary to having the nicer things in life, but keep your credit GOOD. Take advantage of the no payments/interest thing until 2008 by MAKING PAYMENTS every month...right away. Even if it's $100. What they put in small print is that if the balance isn't paid of by December 21, 2007, interest is retroactive to the beginning of the account. Make sure it's paid off by then, and you've just used someone elses $$ for 1 year to pay for your gear. If you don't, that $2000 guitar just cost you $3000 and your good credit for the next 7 years.

Very, very good advice. I would not max the card out either.
