2014 Gibson Lineup Released

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

Gibiphone?

Is it just me, or are they making a BONUS feature out of cost cutting? Isnt it cheaper to extend the frets over the binding as opposed to bind over the frets?

One piece finger boards? They been using laminates?
Bout time they change those dinky worthess strap buttons tho!

Hmmm. Well. Their heads are still firmly planted up their asses through 2014. Still no proper nut slotting, fret dressing, and setup - the things that cost them the most, and that make the largest difference in the apparent level of "quality" that the guitar has. If you don't do that kind of work yourself (and most people don't), you have to add $150 to $200 to the cost of every model in order to get it to where it should be right out of the factory. And this refusal to put the labor time into this stuff is after introducing labor-saving changes like across-the-board Plek'ing and frets over the binding. Plek'ing sounds good on paper to an idealist, but in practice, it can easily be used by a company as an excuse for not doing proper, hands-on fret and nut work individually tailored to each guitar. Anyone who falls for these changes as being more beneficial to the user than they are to Gibson is crazy. So, for 2014, they spend less and they give you a product that is no better than the embarrassing crap that they have already been putting out for at least 10 years. Gibson since the mid-'80's has unfortunately gone from a brilliantly resurrected historical American company back to being an absolute embarrassment to American manufacturing. They're even worse than they were under Norlin IMHO.

how do you arrive at this from the pics? or does the PLEK thing mean no by-hand fret dressing at all? I thought someone still had to put some finishing touches on after a PLEK job.

They are supposed to. But the PLEK is often used as an excuse NOT to.

I assume that the nut shaping and slotting and fret finishing procedure will be just as bad now, if not worse, because they have the PLEK to lean on. (It is terrible now.)

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

The P90/hum models seem cool but the automatic tuning system is lame (and probably adds weight to the headstock). If you don't have ears for that...

Bigger strap buttons are a good idea too; every other Gibson I've seen had puny vintage style ones.

Wonder what the difference between the M and J models is.

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

The M model has the Min-E tune system, the J doesn't. Most complete description of the line I could find is here: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/gibson-reveals-2014-guitar-line-up-589317/1

I'm curious about these new J models though. Gibson have ditched the black plastic covers and put in new pickups, a welcome change I say, that along with the new strap buttons, non-slip knobs, and graphtech nuts

Frankly I found the announcement on their website a bit ridiculous, especially the one piece fingerboards, if they're one-piece now then what were they made of before?

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

They did away with the handsome Alpine White Les Paul Studio --- probably because it was so good looking / not cheap looking like other Studio models, and people used that as an excuse to just buy a Studio and not a Standard or Custom.

Now they all have Band-Aid colored plastics because (they want them to look terrible?)

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

looks like they are switching to a graphtech nut tho. Wonder why they gave up the corian?
Also, Is it me, or does that new tuning system look very video game like??

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

those are def made in not the usa with not the solid wood, lol

for real? NON AMERICAN "genuine" gibbies? are you joking about the feel, or is it like one of those "finished/assembled in USA" or "HQ address on the neckplate (well, headstock here)" loopholes like Kramer, Charvel, Ibanez, etc. did in the 80s/early 90s???

Re: 2014 Gibson Lineup Released

Screw it - I like it. They're making the self tuning systems less invasive. Is it traditional? No. Does it make things easier for players starting out to strum a chord and be in tune? Absolutely. For the live player who needs to tune up quickly in between songs in a set it makes sense, too. I'm shocked they're made in USA at this price. Is the fretboard that synthetic material again? I've never tried one with it, but the consensus seemed to be it sounded like rosewood and felt like ebony which sounds like the right mix to me.

Graphtech nuts? I see that as a way to avoid having an expensive setup done as itsabass alluded to with the PLEK technology. Thing is, it works. I had a Firebird a few years ago that was terrible with keeping it's pitch. I replaced the nut myself with a pre-cut Graphtech nut and it never gave me a problem, plus it warmed up the tone a hair to make it more balanced. That ended up being a great guitar and I'm sure these new Gibsons are going to sound great, too.

Ack..no no no. Gimme two bottles of Grolsch with any guitar purchase instead.

Big buttons mean you sometimes actually have to screw em in and out. Obnoxious w/ the still-necessary grolschloks.
