2018 Project #3: Cabanacaster

This is the thread for my third project of 2018. I’m calling it a Cabanacaster, but I have yet to come up with a name for her.

The Cabanacaster idea actually came from my buddy down under, Kramersteen. He made a comment one time about making a guitar to look like one of my Hawaiian shirts and we started discussing it as sort of a joint project where he would direct me through the steps. As it turns out though, I misunderstood what he intended, which was to take a Hawaiian shirt pattern (fabric), apply it to the guitar and then bury under clear. It’s a really cool idea, but I was thinking he meant for the pattern to be painted on. I asked my 17-year-old artist daughter if she wanted to paint it and she does... so I decided to put off the fabric application for another project sometime. I just wasn’t gonna tell her “no” after she started showing the interest!

Anyway, I got the body for $10 from someone on Facebook... it appears to come from a First Act ME505 guitar. As you’ll see, it’s routed for a single humbucker.

I bought the pickup from forum brother Blille... he was selling a white P-Rail bridge for a good price and it seemed like a great pickup for a single-pickup guitar. By the way, he was a great guy to do business with... thanks man! [emoji1303][emoji41]

Last week I found a Tele neck on eBay that I liked for a great price ($37.59) and it seems pretty amazing! Appears straight, no high frets, and the ends are nicely done.

So here are the pictures of what I have so far:

I also have kind of a cool plan for the wiring that I think will be pretty versatile for a single pickup. I’ll have a three-way mini for selecting coils (Rail, Parallel, & P-90). The volume control will have a push-pull that will put the pickup in series regardless of where the mini is set (think solo boost). The tone control is actually going to be the outer ring on a stacked concentric pot and the inner knob will control a passive overdrive (similar to a Black Ice).

I’ll post more as it comes along. Cayleigh (my daughter) is working on some pattern ideas which I’ll post as I get them. I still have to get all the hardware for this baby (I’m thinking gold). If anyone has suggestions, though, I’d listen!

Another neat project. Since you twisted my arm, I guess I'll make a recommendation that was once made to me a long time back. For the P-Rails you can get an amazing tone by putting an A8 under the rail and an A4 under the P90 and face the rail closest to the bridge. I forget who recommended this too me, but I've used it ever since. I especially like the split tones when modded as per above, but all the tones become much more usable.

Another good thing about the P-Rails is that it's about really let's you push your Underdrive, which if I remember correctly works pretty similarly to the Black Ice overdrive. I don't have any experience with the Underdrive in particular, but I have used that type of thing before.

Re: 2018 Project #3: Cabanacaster

That sounds like what I’ve seen GuitarDoc recommend... and I’ve been toying with the idea. I have P-Rails in my semi-hollow and really like them, but this one might be a good one for trying to separate the rail sound from the P-90 sound a little more since it only has one pickup.

I have a Black Ice in my Westone and it’s kinda fun. It actually gets just a touch quieter when it’s on, which they said would happen with high powered pickups (JB/Jazz). I bought the Underdrive, which is similar, but haven’t tried it yet. The Black Ice has 6 leads and allows you to pick the level of distortion (4 choices) by connecting them together and to your circuit in different ways. The Underdrive has just one choice, but their demo sounded okay and it’s less than half the price of the Black Ice.

Cool when the kids are in on it. Can't wait to see it done.
You're busy, I don't have a project for you.

Lol... I already have 3 bodies and a neck waiting their turn!

And on top of that, my oldest daughter’s partscaster is almost done... just needs several coats of clear and we can start assembling it!

Should be a good summer for you. Got plans for themes for the other bodies?

I’m thinking that the black one will go with the neck. Both need a lot of sanding and finishing to get right, and I’ll need to widen the pocket on the body. I’m actually thinking black with black hardware and black headstock for that one, but that could change.

The blue one actually has a pretty cool glitter mixed into it that’s not really visible in the picture, so I’m just gonna try to get the scratches out and then coats of clear. Gotta find a 24-fret neck (maple board?) for that one, and chrome hardware seems appropriate.

The bass will be my first bass build/assembly and I like the burst so, like the blue one, I plan to try and get the scratches out and refinish. Thinking gold hardware.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! I picked this thing up last year because my wife wanted it... because it’s PINK. She wants me to fix it up and teach her how to play it, but it needs a new neck BADLY! The neck is warped and the fret ends might as well be razor blades. She also wants me to replace the white pickguard with pearl.

Pearl, pearloid, and pearlesque pickguards are the most bestest.

Looks like a nice docket of projects!

Re: 2018 Project #3: Cabanacaster

All black will be cool.
( just my thoughts) Get those shiney black hardware pieces, chrome black or whatever they are called, stain the neck black. Then put some angles on the body with a belt sander, and call it the BriGuy Stealth Glide.

Thank YOU! Really glad to see the pickup is going to be put to awesome use :)

Looking forward to seeing the project evolve!

Yes, that was my suggestion.

How integral is the washing machine to the final tone? What detergent do you use? What brand is it?

I hear Tide gives nice bright cleans, but with more Gain you start to get a drier tone.
