2019 Gibson SG

I'm hesitant to post this, due to the excess Gibson hate present, but I believe this is a good Gibson release for Gibson fans to discuss.

I believe this is a beautiful SG with graceful appointments. Did I mention that I find it beautiful? I don't normally care for tortoise guards on guitars, but I find it very pleasing on this model. I'm also fine with the price for this brand new SG. I find it in many ways on the same level as the SG Standard. I even appreciate the use of the small block inlays. I realize that T-Tops are polarizing pickups, but enough people now covet them that it's probably a good move by Gibson to use them on some of the newer offerings. People on this board are likely to change the pickups in this guitar regardless; or in any guitar they purchase for that matter. I know that I do. So I don't usually complain about what stock pickups the manufacturer installs. I have a nice box for them to live in.

I like the direction Gibson has taken with the few new models we've seen the new management team release. There has not been adequate time nor sufficient models released for anyone to pronounce judgement regarding what direction Gibson will ultimately venture. However, if they continue to concentrate on their core model guitars and release updated or even re-issue some favorite USA guitar models, I believe most Gibson customers will be pleased.

It's perfectly acceptable that many of you believe Gibson products to be overpriced refuse, but I would prefer to keep that predilection absent in this thread. Those of us that appreciate Gibson may then have civilized discourse on the matter. Thank you in advance.

Did I mention I believe this to be a beautiful guitar?

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I'm not a fan of them getting rid of the locking tuners but I like that they're sticking with the small pickguard at least. 2017/2018 models are better IMO.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I haven't played any 2019 Gibsons yet, so I will be a good little boy and not comment on speculation.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I like the smaller pickguard as well. I've been eyeing the '62 reissue with the small black guard for some time. I am partial to the Cherry color too, since it's traditional, but this one is expanding my horizons.

Chistopher, you're more than welcome to comment. I'm simply attempting to keep the vitriolic discourse at bay.

Not bad looking at all.

I don't think anything we are seeing is a result of new management just yet. I believe we will have a better idea in about a years time.

Curious to see what Gibson's winter NAMM plans are.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I like it.

Note: T Type, not T Top. I can’t imagine much difference in that and an A5 490...

In my experience, T Tops aren’t much different than most flavors of low wind A5. They aren’t magical. Neither are (GASP!!) PAFs.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I've liked SG's since forever. Small pickguard only, the big one looks bad to me.
Used to own a '61 SG Junior with a P-90 that RULED.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

Beautiful guitar to me. I normally like the big pick guard (especially on red or black SG's) but the colors of this one work better with the small one.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

Overall I like it. I do however have an aversion to guitars with face mounted jacks. Bugs me.

At one point I had three Gibsons, all with face-mounted jacks (an SG, a 335, and a Marauder). I don't like the way it looks as much but I prefer it when playing. They are the reason god gave us 90 degree plugs.

Love the small tortoise guard on that one. If that model comes in black I am in love.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

To each their own. Personally I've never been to crazy about the body shape of an SG. Needless to say cosmetics has always been pretty important to me in a guitar.

Yes it looks nice. I like the transparent finish so you can see the beautiful mahogany
(and also check that it is one piece of wood and not several)

The hard tail is better than my old vibrola to set the action.

T-Tops ? I removed them all for Duncans.

They have the "normal" tuners now ?

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

I like guitars where I can see the woodgrain, like this finish and the SG cherry, but I can appreciate that some folks don't. Fortunately Gibson usually seems to offer at least one solid color on most runs. I know that some folks don't like the SG shape either. Good old Lester Paulfus didn't care for it any. Plenty of guitars on the sea for everyone.

Re: 2019 Gibson SG

That is a pretty nice SG but I'm weird about SG's. I personally don't like the bound necks with the unbound bodies. I also don't like the slim taper neck profile, I need a bit chunkier neck. I do like the darker walnut and cherry finishes and I can live with the larger pickguard as far as looks go. I haven't spent enough time with SG's to form a generalized opinion on whether the pickups mounted to the guard versus rings makes a difference by itself. At any rate, I guess if I were to buy a recent SG I'd have to go back a couple years to find a decent 2016 faded. I think they had chunkier necks. I'd prefer a darker walnut (or cherry), gloss finish, small pickguard, unbound, chunky neck ... I don't think that's gonna happen.
