22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

Is it just me or does the neck pickup sound sweeter and more different to the bridge pickup in a guitar with 22 frets instead of one with 24?

It must be because there is an increased distance between the pickups on a 22 fret guitar, but i dunno.

What's your take on it?

Re: 22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

It depends on the guitar. If it is a SG than no. Anything else most likely.

No, your ears don't deceive you. It is a long held belief that positioning the screw coil of the neck h/b under the 24th fret position gives the best blend of harmonics as its at a strong NH place. Naturally in a 24F guitar this is impossible.

Re: 22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

They tend to sound different. To negate some of this, I like to use slightly hotter pickups in the neck of a 24 fret axe than I would under normal conditions. I have used an 8.3K PGb in the neck of some of my 24 fret axes to good effect.

What did you think would happen if you move the pickup towards the bridge?

I like the 24-inspired position better, in particular when you do both humbuckers split and the like. Also less boomy.

Joe Satriani's 24 fret guitar has a single sized neck humbucker precisely to combat the "wrong" pickup position in that sort of guitar.

Yeah, some people are really picky about it.
Personally, it doesn't bother me. The neck position can sound great in a 22 fret or 24 fret guitar

Always depends on what tone you are trying to get, and if you have the right pickup for that guitar/task.

Re: 22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

I'm really picky about the neck position, much more so than with the bridge. I've never been completely happy with the sound of a neck humbucker in a 24-fret guitar, when it comes to those old-school blues & rock tones. There are different sounds from humbuckers in 24-fret guitars that I really like, but none of them has been anything like what I expect from, say, a Les Paul with a PAF-type in the neck.

Re: 22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

I use the neck pickup a lot and can definitely notice a difference . . . I hear a kind of smoother, rounder sound with the 22-fret positioning. 24-fret position neck pickup is a little bit brighter. It can sound great in either, but I tend to like the 22-fret spot better.

Re: 22 fret Vs 24 fret neck pickup position

Sometimes I feel the neck position is too much for a 'bucker. I somehow feel that the neck position belongs to single coils...

I prefer Hot Rails in the neck position of my own 24 fret guitars. Humbuckers don't work as well, they simply don't give you that nice creamy lead tone.

I love the Hot Rails in my Japanese Soloist. I've got a switching option that lets the neck-position HR run in parallel, and it sounds like a fat, loud, slightly dark single-coil. Not exactly a Les Paul, and not exactly a Strat, but pretty awesome and really versatile.
