Okay, so here we go. I have been looking for at place to post this question, since I've spend hours and hours looking for an answer, and I reckon this is a good place.
Has anyone ever, use a wire gauge close to 24 to wound a pickup? I have broken a strat-style pickup and want to try and fix it, however I do not want to spend the price of a new one, so ordering 42 gauge wire from overseas (which I can not get where I am located) is not an option. I have some 24 gauge wire at hand, and have been contemplating giving it a shot ... Also I think it is fun to try and challenge the norm set by a guy some 60 yrs. ago.
I am looking for experience. Seems like there is plenty of theory of what will happen i.e. the pickup having low output due to not enough windings etc. but has anyone actually tried it out, or is able to point me in a direction of someone who tried it out?
I found an image (ONE!?) which looks like a real heavy coiled PU. the PU is from a Les Paul Recording, however I can not seem to find anymore info on this.
Again, I am really hoping to hear from someone who did this gauge, or similar gauge, personal experience or examples.
Thanks
