250K Ohms Vol Pot Instead of 500K Ohms:

One of my guitars has a mahogany body with maple top, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, set-in construction, JB in the bridge and 59 in the neck, push-pull tone pot and a 500K Ohms vol pot. I had a mind to replace the 500K vol pot with 300K or 250K without altering the tone pot. Will the tone be too muddy if I install 250K ? How much will it affect the original tone of the guitar ?

you will lose some high end off the top. if its too bright as it is, give it a try

IME, a guitar of that construction is likely to be good with 500K pots at minimum. But it's a taste thing in the end, and every instrument is a bit different. I'd try 250K, 500K, and 1M and see which you like best. There are some in-between pots out there too (e.g. 300K), though I have not tried them.

The lore of the JB would suggest it was designed to work with a 250k.

I use 250k pots with just about everything. There are exceptions but that's what I generally use.

It's not a big deal to swap a vol pot. Try a 250 and see what you think.

I personally prefer to use 500k pots. If it sounds too bright, I just roll off the tone pot. After all, that's what it's there for.
