250k or 500K tone pot?

I just got an EVH Wolfgang (not the Peavey but the new Fender EVH) and noticed it was a little darker than I expected. I looked at the volume and tone pots and noticed the tone pot was 250k. Does this effect the tone?

I have read a lot about volume difference but didn't really see or understand clearly about the effect of the tone pot.

Would a 500k replacement add more brightness to my tone?

Could anyone provide me with some guidence? I'm think of changing the tone pot to a 500k and have two volume knobs instead of a volume and tone.

yes a 250k pot warms things up a bit. if you are cutting the tone pot out of the circuit, it would result in a brighter tone anyway, as would changing to a 500k tone/volume pot.

Disconnect the tone control and see if it gets any brighter. If not, it won't do you any good to change it to a 500k pot. DiMarzio recommends 1 Meg Tone pots for some pickups.

what WGTP said

if you have a soldering iron just disconnect the lead from the volume to tone and see if you like it . I had 250k volume with a humbucker and it didnt make much difference removing the tone but it made heaps when I changed the volume to 500

Thanks everyone. I'll try disconnecting the lead to the tone and see how that changes things. I've never used the tone pot for much of anything so it's never a requirement for me. I'm sure there are players who use it but it has no purpose for me.

Now that I think about it I sold a peavey wolfgang beacuse I couldn't get it to sound like I want it...I wished I had this forum back in the 90's. Great info!!

Much appreciated.
