3 Humbucker Wiring (and PUP selection) w/ Triple Shots

Hey There,

I emailed SD and they suggest I post here.

So I'm thinking of changing out the pups in this beauty:

Typically the middle pup is also a neck pup in a 3 humbucker LP config...

Why is that? Would a bridge sound bad there?

I'm considering Seymour Duncan '59s in the neck and bridge and maybe something crazy like a Dimebucker in the middle. Is there any reason that a neck Pup wouldn't sound good in the middle?

I'm totally open to suggestions but I'm thinking:

5 way switch
3 volumes
Master tone with a bumble bee
Triple Shots
Push Pull Pots

Now, what I don't know - with triple shots what are my options with 3 pups?

I know I want coil splitting. phase would be nice. Not sure if / how series and parallel would work with a 5 way switch?

Maybe I wouldn't even need Triple shots? Could I pull this off with a 5 way and 4 push pull pots?

Watch the tonefiend project (part two I think) where Joe installs two rings in a standard HH Les Paul. My suggestion would be that "after wiring options" would be a huge win for me vs wanting to do something different and being stymied or required to rewire your bay.

The rings cover the coil splits (N & S) as well as serial and parallel setups. The wiring beyond the triple shot is very easy because the ring looks like a single wire pickup versus a 4 wire humbucker to the rest of the electronics. Some wicked strat diagrams are out there and 'if' you dive into the triple shots, those should translate pretty well to your application (outside of the fact of the control changes of course).

I've got a project under review my a great guy in the Guitar Shop forum who's assisting in fixing my jacked up attempt at the diagram. It's a H-H-H strat with two rings and three P/P pots + a 5 way super switch. The choices are enough to cause your head to spin.

Just take your best shot at the wiring, and post it here in drawing form (hand/computer - doesn't matter) - All the description in the world doesn't help as much as the schematic and the experts saying "That's not gonna work ('dork' in my case) and do this instead. Learning the base schematics for me was a bit daunting but it all fell together when I saw enough varied designs to say "Ah hah!". Small moves...

FWIW; if you tweak the rig with someone elses diagram and don't know how it works, how will you ever solve problems or update the design? Of course, there's someone in your neck of the woods who will do this for you for a fee; may be worthwhile. (and they might let you watch!)
Cheers and good luck - these last few weeks have been fun for me learning a whole new skill. Hope its the same for you hagcel!

And if you use the rings, this guitarelectronics.com diagram can get you started, and just sub-out the P/Ps for the standard pots.

DO NOT Use this (hahahahaa - it's wrong) for real wiring but for depth/detail and considering what you can cram into the little bay in your axe, it's sort of the level of complexity you get to with these builds/mods. https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=239889
This is the diagram I posted offsite & is what helping hands are supporting me on - if I can help afterward, I'll be happy to.

Thanks! Yeah, Tone Fiend is what got my going on this! haha it's the 3 buckers that's got me a little confused but I suppose the switch will take care of that?

Any idea about PUP options? Would it be weird to have a high output bridge pup in the middle?

Well, personally I wouldn't - these guys are the pros at this and they are adament about bridge vs other pups for a reason - I dunno why that is... What about the Distortion or Invader? That's what I would do; use a bad ass pups seem to work out better in that position that's rated for the neck, but can also swing the middle position...

There's another option, which is get a Dime and a Disto and try both - not sure on return policies and stripping the little bit of wire coverings, but if it works out you may Amazon it and try it. In another thread someone was talking about using bridge pups in the neck, and the bottom line is that its your call - the PuPs' Police aren't gonna show up. It's just your straying outside the proven, tested configs that SD has spent handily to perform - You may love it... Maybe not so much help there...

Joe Gore is hella nuts and I love it! When I saw that YouTube he shot, I was stunned and jazzed that others were as config loony as I am...:1:
