3 pickup firebird

What options do I have replacing the middle mini HB pickup with a SC pickup while not altering the appearance?

Re: 3 pickup firebird

None.....unless you can manage to find a pickup that has perfectly flush poles so you can glue a firebird cover onto the top.

Re: 3 pickup firebird

Take an old strat pickguard, or buy a cheap ebay one, and use it to make a custom pickup adapter plate.

what dont you like about the pup you have? is it a modern gibson firebird?

It seems rather redundant to me. I'd like to put in something that will contrast the two HBs.

Well, as typical/vintage firebirds sound more like a 'fat strat' than anything else, going for yet another of that tonal ballpark seems the wrong way IMO. My choice would be to try a Gibson LP Deluxe style mini . It is made more like a conventional humbucker - which will be distinct tonally from the f/b pickup.

modern gibson fb pups are usually overwound so putting a vintage type in the middle would be a nice contrast

It never occurred to me to go with a vintage HB. I 'do' already have plenty of Strat style SC guitars so that may be the way to go.
