3-pickup sg

Hello all!

I recently purchased an Epiphone remake of the classic Les Paul SG Custom from 1960. I'm looking to replace the pickups in this bad boy and I was curious about what the members from the board here think. My taste tends to extreme side of metal. I currently have a Les Paul copy that has a Distortion/JB combo so I'm looking for something a little different from the SG.

After glancing at the tone wizard, I thougt I'd go with the following combo:

Neck - Jazz
Middle - 59
Bridge - Custom

Just a shot in the dark...if anyone has any better combo ideas or experience with a 3 humbucker setup, please, by all means, let me know

I was just going to suggest that combo. Put them in and enjoy! :burnout:

I'm also considering EMGs, a combo of 60-85-81...but honestly, i'm feeling lazy and dropping in the duncans would make for a much easier wiring arrangement, you know?

Any metalheads/rockers on the board use the Custom? Can you tell me about your experiences with that model?

I'm not into EMG's, but the Duncan set you mentioned sounds like an excellant combo. I especially like the idea of a Jazz neck and 59N middle pickup. I say go for it. Lew

That Duncan combo also sounds like a winner to me. Glad we could help. :laugh2:

I'm leaning heavily towards the duncan combo at the moment. Much easier to wire + cheaper....now hopefully I can find them all in white.

I think that sounds like a great combination. I also like Invaders for the bridge position on SG's.

I'm contemplating an Invader for the bridge as well. With the current musical project I'm working on, I'd really like an extreme, balls-to-the-wall sound ;-)

I would go jazz in the neck and 59 in the middle...but i think I would go Custom 5 in the bridge...that said...there is nothing wrong with the combo you mentioned...and as for where to get them in white...go a post or 2 up and get ahold of Lew...he's your man!

Can somebody remind me what the pickup combinations are on a three-pickup Gibson-style guitar?

Is it bridge, middle+neck, neck?

I know it doesn't work like a Strat - if one of the pickups is only going to be heard in combination with another that might affect your choice. You probably know that - I just can't remember.

That pesky Wattage is working on a 3-pickup white SG Custom. :cussing:

The combos are neck, bridge and middle, and bridge. In Dan Erlewin's book there's a schematic that allows the standard SG switching and the ability to blend in the middle pickup.

First time around I used the name Necrobeast....don't think I've been here in at least a year, maybe more.

incidentally, my SG is wired so that the middle pickup is ALWAYS on, no matter the switch position

the switch positions are Neck-Middle/All 3/Middle-Bridge

I'm pretty committed on the Jazz/59 in the Neck/Middle....right now debating on the bridge pickup...which is the biggest decision as that's what I'll use the most

I would go JB-59-Jazz, I'm really gassing for a 3 bucker les paul with that set up at the mo, and the JB can cover alot of ground, works on metal for me.

I'm personally not a big fan of the JB. I have one right now in one guitar and rarely use it.

Pups look pretty good to me for what you say you are into. Cool guitar to put them in too.

I just scored a '62 triple pup Custom to restore, unfortunately it'll be a while before real PAFs or Pat sticker versions come along but at the moment it looks like it'll have -

The pickups are installed.

I went with a Jazz in the neck, a tradition pickup, similar to the JB, in the middle position and an Invader in the bridge.

Dudes.

I SERIOUSLY think the Jazz is the best sounding pickup I've ever heard. I could seriously see myself using this pickup pretty much all the time. Wow. The only thing I don't like is that I can't get a lot of pinch harmonics out of that...but otherwise, the tone slays me.

Does anybody know if it's possible to install a 5 way switch on a Les Paul, and make it work like a strat? I personally think that would be kickass.
