335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

Recently got an Epiphone 335 Pro with the Alnico Pro pickups. I'm liking the bridge but the neck feels a little boomy. I'm wanting something tighter (less bassy) but still warm for jazzy tones. I know some have said the 59 but I've heard it's too boomy and I'm not sure if the PG or A2Ps will match the output of the bridge pup. Any advice? Also is it worth it to buy the mojotone upgraded wiring rig? Thanks

If you are up to trying a magnet swap, an A4 might be just the ticket.

I have a WLH set in my 335. They replaced a '59 set and while I didn't find the neck boomy (at least not in this guitar) the bridge was too bright and thin.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

You would have to remove the cover.
If it's something that you aren't comfortable with, I'm sure you will get plenty of other suggestions for alternatives.

I've never tried a magnet swap before. Does it matter that the pickups are covered?

You'll need to remove the covers in order to swap magnets. You could always reinstall them when you're done.

I've only done a couple swaps myself, but was somewhat pleasantly surprised with how easy it was in the end.

Those sound sweet but around $200 is my upper limit. The Seth Lovers are a reach for me so the SNS is out of the running.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

Do you wanna replace both or just the neck? You can always just get the neck pickup.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

If you want to stick with A5 the jazz is a good option. You keep the strong highs and firm lows, but you have quite a bit less "boominess" to the sound. The lows seem more controlled...think of them as an idealized T-top or pre-t-top humbucker.

The A2P has less true bass but quite a bit of low mids. So your ears perceive it as significantly less boomy. The high-mids and highs are much smoother, but you still get the bell-like chime on the high end like a jazz. Some guys like the smoothness others don't, they want the growl.

Those p'ups are actually pretty good; they just need to be set up properly. Not actual REAL need to change'em, if you ask me.

I'm telling you as the actual owner of an ES-339 Pro, which comes with the exact same p'ups. I should know, isn't it?

If money is an issue, you might try a capacitor in series with the hot lead of the neck pickup. As long as it's wired "after" the tone control (between the pots and selector) it should work fine and remains the cheapest/easiest way to "de mud" a neck pickup.

Unless you opt for ArtieToo's "de mud mod".

Oh, and: + 1 about the Jazz evoked by Luke Duke... If it's too bright, it's always possible to warm it up with a low value cap (going from hot to ground, this time).

Good luck in your experiments. :-)

Yeah I fiddled with the neck pickup height and it was better. They are nice pickups I got the 335 rather than the DOT to get them. And the bridge pickup is nice and gnarly.

FTR, I used to own one, changed the neck to a A2Pro and it was night and day IMHO, YMMV etc

The bridge stayed though.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

I switched to Seth Lovers in my Epi Sheraton. Love them. I installed new CTS pots too, 500k. Switching electronics in a semihollow is a bi*ch though. Check some youtubers on the matter before you get at it. There are a couple of smart hacks out there.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

I think your pickups are their Asian version of 57 classics, with maybe the 57+ for the bridge. Many people love 57s in a hollow body, so height/pole adjustments may work out for you.

I put 59s in my Epi Dot, and they sounded best with A4 magnets. A2s are pretty good too, and I didn't really hate the stock A5s.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

If money is an issue, just replace the neck pickup. You can get pretty much your choice for under your budget. You said you like the bridge pickup, so don't change it.

Re: 335 Neck Pickup with less Boom

Lower the neck pickup and raise the pole pieces. You might only need to lower the bass side, but raising the poles will add some clarity. It looks a bit odd and lopsided, but it works for me...I learned this from a Texas blues guy back in the '70s and all of my 335s are set this way with the stock '57 Classics.
