I've used some JazzN's & '59N's, and like them both. The neck position is naturally dark & bassy, so a bright PU is a great fit. A SH-11 is warm, and would be a good match on the bridge (offsets tehebridge's naturally thin & trebley sound).
The idea is to brighten the neck & warm the bridge, so you don't have polar opposites in EQ, and its easy to get one amp setting that works very well for both. What you don't want is a nice neck sound, and then switch to the bridge & have it shrill & tinny, or have a good bridge tone and switch to the neck & have it muffled like its in a closet. Guys with guitars like this end up using only one PU all night, which is kind of boring tonally.

I'm just about to fit my 335 with a 59b and Jazzn, so I'll let you know how it turns out. The guy who does my mods is in the middle of moving his workshop downtown so I'm being forced to wait too long..!! Blueman, if you were to get all poetic and describe the likely tone of a 59b and Jazzn in a 335, how would you describe it? Please feed my obsession to tide me over until this guy gets his shelves painted. Any other forum members care to give their descriptions of the tones of these pickups? There will be a prize of a left-handed screwdriver to the winning entry........

I think the JazzN is one of the great neck HB's. Even in warm bodied guitars (LP's, 335's, etc), it has clarity, definition, & cut. With chords the individual notes come through, and in solos, it has body combined with an edge. Ample body with some sparkle. A5 magnets just shine in neck PU's.
The '59B is one of the world's top PAF HB's. Beautiful clean, & raw and powerful with overdrive. The great British blues-rock players of the late '60's (Green, Kirwan, Page, Clapton, Taylor, Trower, and Grosvenor) were playing Les Paul "Bursts" through Marshall Plexi's. Arguably some of the world's best guitar tones. While Plexi's & original PAF's are scarce, well beyond most people's budgets, we can get the next best thing available today, the '59. Because it has vintage (low) output, it can be bright in some guitars. In mine, I use 250K's with my '59B's, and that takes off the highest treble, brings out the mids, and leaves plenty of cut for solos. Through a good amp, they sing. Shades of Peter Green.

I've got a CC & Jazz on an MSG Standard, I've also got a C5 & Jazz on a hollow body Warmoth Strat. Both combo's work well to my ears. I'd happily put a Jazz on just about anything to be honest.

Quality reply as usual, very motivational and beautifully descriptive. Hoping to get them fitted on Friday, will report back on how I am the latest in a long line of world-class British blues players with perfect tone. Well, maybe 50% of the way there......

I'm a fan of the PG/CC combo. Can't say much about it in a 335. I suppose I need to buy one! I'll say this about any of the standard PAF's (59,A2P,PG) They all go with CC. Remember - The CC will have huge mids, but not so much top and bottom. The pafs will have more highs/lows. The contrast nicely , but also mix well.
Some of my favorite clean tones are the both pups on position blending with the volumes between a CC&PG.
A PG will be brighter, An A2P will be fatter (similar highs to the CC). The 59 is kind iof middle of the two. I like the PG best in my LP's.

I'd recommend the Pearly Gates neck. I love all three, but the PGn is my fave. I've used the SH-11 Custom Custom with alnico 5 and alnico 2 neck pickups and alnico 2 neck pickups seem a better match. Easier to dial in one tone on the amp that sounds right for both the neck and bridge pickups. The jazz and 59 has more bass and treble and less mids than the CC. The PGn and Custom Custom are voiced more similarly...especially in terms of the bass response. Lew

Your last post interests me because I've been toying with the idea of a a Custom5b and PGn in my Les Paul although I've never personally played either. My thinking is "vintage, but potential to be snarly". What do you think?

Right on Lew (as if you are ever "off"). The bass and nature of the highs compliment, the way the mids are with the neck/bridge contrats. Together they are awesome...
