4/8 track recorder

I want to buy a nice, simple 4 or 8 track recorder. Most I've looked at have drums, effects and other stuff built in. I don't see a need for all the bells and whistles. Anyway, what basic recorder would you recommend.

Cassette or digital? Most digital units will have the bells and whistles, but you don't have to use them (then again, you're paying for them...)

If you want a portable digital unit, look into the Zoom or Tascam stuff.

Re: 4/8 track recorder

might want to make sure if it says 8 tracks, it means 8 tracks without bouncing, all with volume sliders. some make you bounce tracks down to mono tracks that share sliders. I like my fostex mr-8 because it records in WAV format, but it's really just a 4-track with the ability to bounce to make 8 tracks, if that makes sense. kind of a pain (and quite limiting).

Which is why I'd say if you didn't need a portable unit for recording a band, just get something to get sound into your PC and a decent program. You can then make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

Thanks for the response and you're all right, the portables are loaded with effects, but there are some units with just the basics. I decided on a Tascam DP02CF, seems versatile, easy to set up and should do what I need.

As long as you only need to record 2 mics at a time.

Re: 4/8 track recorder

I hate PC recording but I love working the tracks on a PC. I record to a Tascam 2488 and then dump everything over in .wav format.

The Tascam stuff is great but the 4/8 track units only record in 16 bit, you have to go up to the 2488 to get 24 bit. The Korg units are really nice too, I don't have experience with anyting else.

Aren't those tascams basically PC's anyway? I would recommend Reaper and a modest M-Audio interface as a cost effective starting point.

I have been using Reaper on a Q6600 Quadcore with an RME 9632 (plus daughter board for 6 inputs) for my Recording gig for some time now. I definitely prefer Reaper's work flow over the Cubendo products it replaced.
