Re: 4 string or 5 string basses?

In the early days of funk when the 5-string was a rarity, everybody funked out on 4-strings. If 5- or 6-strings were as available 40 years ago as now, maybe Jaco would have used them too. Not necessarily as his main instrument but in the same way some people occasionally put down their LP and pick up a Strat for a certain song or two and vice versa.

The one downside to my 6-string is the tighter spacing does make funk slapping and popping a little harder.

+1, very good point - if hendrix was starting off today, who's to say he wouldn't go and play ibanez ;)

Or Jackson, or maybe he´d stay halfway true to his roots and play a flipped over Charvel w V-Trem....hell, maybe even an 8 string baritone, who knows...

All speculation, but still a VERY good point: You CAN`T play an instrument that hasn´t been invented yet, so we can´t really say for sure that they wouldn´t have ;)
