4X12 amp cabinet question...need help please!!

Hello. I tried out an amp cab last night I'm thinking of buying & have a quick question. It's a Celestion loaded used 4X12 & I'm powering it with my Marshall AVT50 combo.

The thing is, the cab has two cable jacks in the back. When I plug into the left jack only the left top & bottom speakers are working. When I plug into the right jack only the right top & bottom speakers are working. Even with just two speakers working it's sounds friggin' awesome compared to just the one 12" in my amp. But, I bought a 4X12 for a reason, 4 speakers!

To have all 4 speakers working at once, is it just a simple wiring alteration inside? I'm thinking this cabinet was wired for a stereo amp previously or something? The guy who's selling it bought it off of someone else & never really used it as he's mostly a drummer now. He told me he didn't realize it was set up for left or right side only.

I want to buy this as the guy's only asking $300, but I also want to make sure it's able to fire on all 4 through my Marshall.

Any input would really help me understand this little delema I have & put my mind at ease before I give this dude some cash. Thanks - Rob

So if I understand this correctly, series-parallel means all 4 speakers are connected in series from one jack & looped to the other jack which would be an output for the option of another cab?

So the way it is wired now, with just the left or right side working would be wired how? Just parallel but not in series?

Series-parallel means that the speakers are paired up in series and that the two pairs are connected in parallel. It doesn't imply the hookup of the second jack but most mono cabs are wired that way.

Right now, each half of the cab is probably connected in parallel.

Ahhhh..Okay, gotit! You've been very helpful.

...but just one more question, then I'll put this puppy to rest. The external speaker output jack on my amp is 4 ohms. Each of the four speakers in the cab are 8 ohms. Is series-parallel still the correct way to go? Tanks

I just sold my 4x12 due to the fact it was way to bulky and heavy. I am now downsizing to a 2x12 because of the portability issue. I'd say if your wanting to gig alot and take it out of your home youd be better off gettin a 2x12 or something. The whole time I owned my 4x12 I only had to move it 6 or so times but I tell ya its sure a pain in the a$$. With that being said I just can't imagine taking a 4x12 to a bunch of gigs. Just a thought..... :) :dance:

S/P would net you an 8 ohm load. Might work fine for you...it might not. Depends on your amp and how forgiving of a mismatch it is.

It's WAY easy. It's just a matter of moving 2 wires. I'm sure a google search would get you a 4-12 wiring diagram.
