4x12" for ENGL?

Hey,

I'll soon be 17, and have decided that i need a 4x12" for more bottom end and highs.

I was thinking of marshall 1960AV as theres a V30 in the amp, but they are rather expensive.

How are the Marshall AVT cabs, Hiwatt cabs (The cheao ones) and the Fender Frontman cab?

Are there others you would recommend.

I think this would be a better choice than a Epiphone Flying V/Jackson JS30King V,

And what would be a good setting for a Screamer to give it that kinda Metallica like sound?

If you have such a high quality amp like an ENGL Screamer, I wouldn't be using any sub-par quality speaker cabs with it until you have the money to get something decent like an ENGL 212 perhaps to extend onto it. I've personally tried this combination of a Screamer combo with an extra ENGL 212 and it sounded delicious...they are fantastic cabs, and if a Marshall 1960 cab is a possibility then you should be able to afford an ENGL 212. Since it's such a higher quality cab it would probably sound bigger with the combo and the 212 running than if you put a Marshall cab onto it.

If that gear list is current in your sig, why not sell the JCM900 for some extra cab money...I really don't think you'd need it if you got a Screamer unless you wanted a backup.

As far as the Metallica sound goes...just experiment. In my experience though a good crunchy sound that Metallica works well through still has a fair few mids in it (DON'T SCOOP THEM), a fair bit of treble and not too much bass...with a decent amount of gain...and also about half presence probably...depends on your cabs

Seriously though I'd get myself an ENGL 212 Vintage cab if I were you...you'll never look back and it'll sound huge!

Are Engl's 212s that much better than 1960As ??? For some reason, and might be totally wrong, intuitively I think Hiwatt 4X12s would be perfect for any Engl.

Man, honestly, the 1960's are pretty **** cabinets, unless you get the JCM800 or earlier ones. The 900 and newer have MDF speaker baffles AND back boards, not to mention the plastic handles, crappy wiring, and crappy jacks/switching.

All of this can be replaced fairly easily, besides the front baffle of course, but why bother replacing stuff when you can spend 100 bucks or so more and get a solid cabinet straight out of the box?

A 2x12 will NEVER match the tone of a 4x12.

Not to start a flame here but that was not his question.

He asked if a 212 will be enough for a gig, and the answer is most definitely YES! Especially since you can run both the 212 cabinet as well as the speaker already in your combo and if you want to you can even point them in different directions for better projection...I think this will work and sound much better for you than going after a cheap 412. Plus you will have the slightly different sounds of the on board speaker as well as the 212 cabinet which will add another dimension to your sound.

Trust me, this will sound HUGE!

I really want that huge sound of a 412.

And its for my own birthday present so i cannot wish for a expensive Mesa cab.

How about Randall cabs?

I have an ENGL 412, and when I tried that combo out in the shop (the screamer plus the ENGL 212) I was blown away!

At least give it a go, take your combo into a shop and try running it with a 212...personally I'd prefer that because of not only the variation in sound you get from running two cabinets (one closed back and one open...I think the combo is open back anyway), but because you can aim them at different parts of the room.

I'm not going to try too hard to convince you though because you seem like you just want to get a 412 because it's "BIG"...all I'm saying is go and try it out so you can make an informed decision.

Engl cabs are some of the most solid cabs i've ever seen(the front grill out of solid metal bars still is something unuique) and they sound great. They are expensive, and you definitely won#t get an Engl 4x12 for the Price of an Epi V or Jackson JS V, but if you save up they are well worth the money. if you go for Engl then go for the pro cabs vintage 30s instead of 60s, they have so much more mojo(tried both with my powerball when i bought it, and the pros just sound way cooler).

it won't sound as big as the 4x12 but it should rock most definitely.

if the 2x12 is too expensive you could go for a 1x12 engl cab and form a mini stack. At least that would look cool.

Oh my god...

After i got off work last night, the boss pulled me a side, and i thought i was gonna get fired because of, me and some of the under bosses or whats its called had been in a fight, but damn no.

He gave me a ******n pay raise. Now i make close to 15$/hour, which is very good for a 16year old, over here.

So i think i'll purchase a proper 4x12" for my own money and wish for a new guitar.

So which 4x12" would kick butt for this amp?
