5 way selector circuit diagram - please help!

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum - very best regards to all.

I am despeartley looking for a circuit diagram for the 5 way lever switch in my Ibanez SV470. Its a single PCB with 8 lugs & I believe 2 poles - same as a YM-50. I have seen lots of wiring diagrams - but no circuit diagrams. I need to know how this switch is pinned out - i.e. the internal schematic - what is connected to what in each position so that I can work out how I want to install the SD set that I have just bought.

I was an electronics engineer for many years and I see lots of great advice and guesses about how PUPs are or should be wired. But if you just know how this switch works - then you can work it all out easily. The light will go on!

Would be very grateful indeed if anyone can send or point me to a schematic.

The best way to pin-out an unknown switch is with an ohmmeter.

If your wiring lugs are 8 in a row, chances are pretty good that pins # 4 and 5 are the common connection to the two poles. 1, 2, and 3 correspond to the pin #4 common, with 6, 7 and 8 corresponding to the pin #5 common.

Most 5 position switches with two poles are of the "make before break" type for switch positions 2 & 4 - as the switch should really be considered as a double pole triple throw with two extra shorting positions inbetween.

a --> o = 1
b --> o = 1+ 2
c --> o = 2
d --> o = 2+3
e --> o = 3

i am 99% sure that it is pinned out like this

easy enough to check with a multimeter

Thanks guys - this is the best explanation that I have seen yet.

I don't have a multimeter otherwise I would have just buzzed it out.

One last question to complete the picture -

are the poles (00) connected to all 1's, 2's and 3's simultaneously for all switch positions (a, b, c, d, e) or is there a crossover point in the through of the switch?

Hi tone4days,

I have buzzed out the switch and can confirm that there is no spilt in the throw of the switch. Both poles (00) are connected to the lug numbers simultaneously. I have created a schematic diagram but can't see how to post it. I can send it to anybody who wants it if they give me their e-mail address.
