i was just wondering how a 50 watt head with a 2X12 would be compared to say a 50watt with 4X12 or a combo 2X12....?

for volume purposes, loud enough to gig on? will it break up (tubes) at bedroom volumes?

I like my 412 because it's taller than a normal horizontal 2x12. That makes it easier to hear at gigs.

Yes a 2x12 can be plenty loud (and big) for gigs.

The actual volume wont be very much different between a 2x12 and a 4x12.

The early breakup depends on the amp. If you have a master volume then you can probably get preamp tube breakup but probably no power amp breakup unless you attenuate the output.

You didn't mention your style of music. A 2x12 will get plenty loud for a gig, but the response won't be as smooth, have as much low end, and the resolution won't be as high as a 4x12. If you're playing hard rock or metal, you might want to consider using at least one 4x12 cab. but, if you're jamming w/a drummer that's a real hard hitter, you may have trouble hearing yourself through a 2x12. For live use, most clubs mic the guitar cabs anyway, and you will have no problem being heard.

a fitty watter and a 2x12 will cover everything from your bedroom to clubs .. and bigger really ... I kinda prefer a 4x12's fullness .. but I know cats that gig the world w/ the 50 + 2X12.. plenty of volume.

It's a great setup. I remember those jcm 800 50 watt 2x12's as being really nice amps.

and you can always add another 2x12 to the mix if needed.

My Plexi and the 2/12 get along just fine. All my stuff has been recorded with this set up and I have been extremely pleased. It seems a 2/12 is just a bit more explosive to me, my old 5150 is a great example. Could just be my imagination, but I haven't missed having a 4/12 which I sold in 96.
