$500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

Early 90s PV Ultra is a screamer at around 200-250.00 used. 3 Channels clean is clean and the grind is endless. Used one for several years. Decent tubes and an Avatar cab and you have some bargain tone going on. Laney AOR while not as good clean ( really a one channel beast) are great british voiced rock amps. I picked mine up for 220.00, changed a few caps and that thing is lovely sounding.

Seriously, you'll likely be lusting after a tube amp this time next year if you get a solid state halfstack now. If you're absolutely hellbent on getting a halfstack, at LEAST get a good cab, something from Avatar, or a solid used Marshall, Mesa, etc. That way, when you realize what we're trying to tell you is true, you'll only need to find a tube head, not a tube head AND a good cab.

Edit: And really, a 5150 head goes for $500 or less on eBay quite often, that's METAL!

Look around. I picked up a 5150 cab that was a little beat up from a guitar center (they don't sell peavey gear, and usually get rid of it pretty cheap) for $250. I went through Instrumentexchange.com, and the same ad on ebay was going for $310, plus shipping. If you go through instrumentexchange, and find a deal, it'll help you save a few on shipping since they're 80-90 lbs.

If you find 'em right, you can get a 5150 halfstack for maybe $700-800. That'd blow away any memories of what you're currently considering.

I got my head for $650 used, but in pristine condition, and also got a combo for $650 used. You might even consider that combo, since it's plenty loud (60 conservatively rated watts), and you can send it to a cab if you want to.

If you're looking for Rock, metal, blues sounds, within that price range, that's my suggestion. Otherwise, I'd go with the avatar cab (choice of speakers) and maybe a Carvin Legacy (also a good rock amp).

I just read about the 6505 how its pretty much the 5150, they just changed the name of it. I'll take into considering the 5150, sounds like a head and cab that would rule.

I'll search for it when I get time. Or if you can link me, that would bre appreciated.

One SS Amp that blew me away wa the Peavey Supreme. Stupid looking, but HUGE headroom and crushing distortion.

Just an idea...

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

As an FYI..the 5150/6505 combo is a closed back design...so you will get some UMPH compared to a typical combo amp..

IICR, VHolic prefers the tone of the combo over the heads...he just runs it into a 4x12 marshall cab

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

That closed design does sound promising too. I guess I could order this stuff from MF right? Ebaying for it sounds sketchy to me. Getting a 5150 does sound cooler than having a 6505 ya know. 5150 I guess is kind of vintage if they don't make em anymore. Shouldn't be that hard to get if Peavey massed them.

I'll look into it.

Re: $500-700$ dollars, new amp in mind?

I wouldn't go so far as to call 'em vintage. They only started being produced in the early 90's. They need another decade or so before they reach that status. They only stopped calling them 5150's earlier this year, or late last year, when EVH split with Peavey.

Yes, that closed back design gives a thump that'll rattle your chest, combo or head. I like both versions. I played my combo through the 5150 cab for a while, and wanted to get the head also to play with that. The combo offers reverb, where the heads don't.

You can do a search here and find out the other nuances between the + models, but the actual design, materials, and construction of the 5150 and 6505 are the same.
