500k or 250k?

Re: 500k or 250k?

500K audio (log) volume + 500K tone for fullsize HB's
or just a 500K volume w/o the tone pot (a la EVH, Jake E Lee..)

Re: 500k or 250k?

for the neck, definitely use 500k. in the bridge, it's a bit of a toss up. if you want more bite and clarity, then go with the 500k. if you want more warmth and thickness, go with the 250k. personally, i'd go with CTS 500ks all around with an orange drop .015 cap as i don't like to have that much rolloff with my tone control. i wouldn't be too worried about it being too bright on the bridge pickup with a 500k since the explorer is a gibson design with the mahogany body and set neck, lending itself to a warmer sound.

Re: 500k or 250k?

+1. I use two 250K's on my bridge PU's. I can't stand thin, bright bridge PU's. I want them full with a balanced EQ. Standard cap value .022 is fine.

One person's "thin" is another person's "clear" and one person's "balanced" is another person's "muddy." One of the best things I ever did was swap out the stock 300K pots on my SG for the full 50's wiring scheme with 500K audio taper pots.

Re: 500k or 250k?

500k's all around with either .015 or .022 caps.

My feeling is that if you put in a 500k pot in the bridge and it sounds a bit too bright, then roll off the tone pot a bit to essentially create the effect of a 300k or 250k. BUT, if you put in a 250k pot and it doesn't sound bright enough, what do you do? You can't turn UP the tone pot any more than it already is...you'd just have to takee it apart and put in a 500k anyway. Might as well start with the 500k and have the option to just reduce the highs with the tone control.

I use 500k's all around and almost never have to use the tone control. I still get a very warm and thick sound when I want it. That's what the amp is for (most amps I've seen have tone controls on them allowing you to turn down the treble).

Re: 500k or 250k?

500+ all the way around. You can always turn the bridge volume down... but you cant turn it up past 10. Why limit yourself with 250k pots? horrible idea, IMO.
