500K with stack pickups??

Most manufacturers recommend using 500K pots with their stack pickups, has anyone tried it with 250K? Does is make a huge difference, if it's too bright I won't bother. I have a Strat and I like the stock neck and middle I just want a little thicker, darker, quieter tone from the bridge. I was thinking the Seymour Classic Stack Plus or the Dimarzio Virt. Vin. Solo Pro. Any thoughts? :knockedou

lower pot value darker tone, higher pot value brighter tone.
dont know about hums with 250k but i went from 500k to 1meg and the difference was subtle but there.

If you just want to know what the 250K volume poti would sound like and you have a 500 Kohm poti then you can just put a 500 Kohm resistor parallel to the pickup (in front of switches, potis etc.). That screws up the curve of the poti but at position 10 it's exactly the same thing.

And you can do that with crocodile clips, so no soldering required. If you have a top-routed guitar with pickguard the best setup for experimentation is that you put the crocodile clips on and lead them outside the guitar, then put pickguard and strings back on. Then you can experiment with different resistors and capacitors on the crocodile clips without reopening the guitar.

I should really put some diagrams for this stuff on my website...

Re: 500K with stack pickups??

i would generally say it depends on the SC sized humbucker. the lower DC and gain hums i would avoid the 500k pots (dimarzio VV, 58's, 61's, classic stacks) the more vintage the stacked hum is trying to sound more i would avoid the 500k. but a set of cool rails with a hot rails at the bridge would probably be fine with 500k. i've had the vintage rails and thought it was ice pick with 250k's. me shudders to think what would happen with 500k. a lil 59 would probably be fine either way.

my understanding is the volume pot makes the most difference with the "tone", but you could get a 1meg tone pot with a 250k vol pot to juice up the treble a bit (and of course you can turn the tone down).

assuming you get classic stacks or dimarzio vintages, what do you plan for the bridge?
