57 Cassic Magnets Rough or Smooth?

Re: 57 Cassic Magnets Rough or Smooth?

They are most probably smooth....but tonally rough and smooth will make no difference if they come from the same source.

This.

Whether a magnet is smooth or rough sided, the edges of the magnet that touch the metal parts of the pickup are ground smooth. In this regard I have read compelling information that says this makes them sound the same, if they are from the same batch of magnets. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence here and other places that roughcast or un-oriented magnets do make a difference in the tone of the pickups. Whether this is because of the rough surface of the magnet or the fact that they are from different foundries or made of different alloys, I don't know.

But I do know that a smooth magnet in a SD pickup replaced with a roughcast or un-oriented magnet will sound different. Same thing with the 57's or any other pickup. The OP didn't say if he was unhappy with the magnets in his 57's, but if so changing magnets is a very cost effective way of altering your tone.

I'm not looking to swap magnets. I'm just curious as to how Gibson makes them. I've read plenty on people trying magnet swaps in them, but nothing is ever mentioned about what configuration the original magnets are. Thanks.

Re: 57 Cassic Magnets Rough or Smooth?

I've serviced way over a hundred units, between '57 Classics and '57 Classic Pluses, being the earliest from 1992 and the latest from 2017.

All of them came with polished A2 mags.

Interesting. I pulled, what i believe, is a 57 classic from an MIJ Epiphone Les Paul that had been heavily modified. I pulled the cover off and it was clearly a RCA2 mag in there. Maybe this pickup isn't a 57 classic? It has the sort of scratched off PAF sticker on the bottom.
