Hello everyone, and thank you to anyone reading this. I'm a first time poster here, but have been using these forums as a resource for a few years now.
My question is whether I can pull the kind of tones I'm looking for from a 59 in the bridge of my SG. It currently has a '59 in the neck position and I really like it there.
The main type of music the guitar is for is some brand of really bluesy metal, the tones may try to be similar to what you'd hear in ozzy era Sabbath, a modern band like the sword or red fang. I don't want the bottom end to be too incredibly tight. I play a lot of blues based rock genres, and some alternative too (more soundgarden than nirvana) and this is my nicest guitar, so I'd like to be able to cover most of this ground comfortably. Oh, and for what it's worth, I play out of a USA crate palomino V32. It's all tube, EL-84. Cab is kind of bassy. Would the '59 bridge help me cover the ground I'm looking to cover? It's available in my area for a reasonable price.

I don't see why this couldn't be a good idea. Another pup for you could be the 59/Custom Hybrid. The 59b is a pretty scooped pup. If you want to compensate for the cab being a little woofy, the 59/C is a bit more mid and treble friendly, so your sound is a little more even.

Hey! Thanks Johnny the Kid, I'll look into that pickup. I was also curious about the screamin deamon (spelling?), again because it's available near me. I've heard it's sort of misnamed, but I still worry it might be a little too geared toward the tones of the eighties for my taste, but I understand it's alnico and a quality pickup.

I don't have much experience so I wouldn't know how to describe it. The SD website describes it as an open sounding pickup, so I feel like a tight low end wasn't a huge design point?

Word. I don't know what all the Buzz words mean exactly, but I get what you mean by that there.

Clear and articulate is the best way I could describe the Demon. A good bit less output than a JB (at least in the mids) but greater than or equal to a Gibson 57 Classic. I have my Demon in a FR equipped super strat, so that will make a difference. I would definitely try it though, as it has lasted longer in that guitar than the JB or a Blackout did, due to it being lower output and having much better clean tone, and being less mushy through higher gain.

Then that may not be the best pickup for the OP. He specifically mentioned not wanting something too tight in the low end and mentioned Black Sabbath, Red Fang, and the Sword. They don't exactly have mushy tones, but they aren't super percussive either. I'd say the 59/C would be best for him.

Re: '59 bridge for SG

I like a '59 set in SG's, but with a warmer magnet in the bridge. A UOA5 works very well for me (blues/classic rock) in a '59B. Tames the high end, sounds fuller, and has a lot of A2 type texture, and without the bassiness of a regular A5.

Re: '59 bridge for SG

I agree with Johnny- the 59/Custom Hybrid would have the power but it doesn't sound super-compressed like many metal pickups. It cleans up well with the volume knob, and at lower volume settings (like 5-9) you can enough characteristics of the 59 but with the added boost of the Custom coil.

Thank you ALL so much for your responses! That 59/C sounds awesome, but I can get the 59 used today for a good deal, and am extremely budget conscious. I think, if it can do it, even if it doesn't do it the BEST, I might have to go with it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't a million miles from where I wanted to be.

Nope. The 59 is a fantastic pickup for what you want to achieve. Good luck to you.

Re: '59 bridge for SG

Thanks again guys. Bought the '59 and installed it. Really sounds awesome for everything I like to do, so far. Maybe one day I'll scoop up one of those 59/C pups, and try the 59 in my semi hollow.
Thanks again,
Matt
