59 bridge vs. custom 5- big difference?

Hey guys... lusting for a hamer studio right now... I wanted to know what you thought of the 59 vs. the custom for the bridge. The reason I ask is that I am really leaning toward the c-5 over any other pickup but it doesnt seem much different than the 59 that comes in the bridge standard with the guitar. Higher output, obviously... is that it? I like high output but I also like not having to mess around with the guitar or buy new pickups :)

the SD pickup booster or a bumped-up eq pedal would probably accomplish the same thing would it not? Can i give the sound of a high output pickup (assuming this is the main difference) through other means?

thanks guys!

Re: 59 bridge vs. custom 5- big difference?

The '59 has a slight gap between the midrange and the highs and lows that gives the pickup a lot of clarity and definition. However, it still has a nice full midrange that lets it grind when you need it to. I found that in the C-5, there was more trebel and bass, but not much more mids. The lows woofed like a mother, which was fun, and the top end was nice and chimy without being harsh, but the midrange was really tough to bring out to get a nice grindy sound.

anyone else have input on this?

would the 'pickup boost' or eq boost do the trick?

Re: 59 bridge vs. custom 5- big difference?

i'm a recent C5 user, having the CC & the Custom in other guitars, what i hear from the C5 is more lower midrange as oppossed to the Custom's deep- throat voicing & CC's bright output. if you need something that growls, the C5 would fill in on that.

Re: 59 bridge vs. custom 5- big difference?

I prefer the 59 over the Custom 5. To me the C5 has a higher output and more bass and that seems to result in the C5 seeming to have a little more of a scooped midrange effect than the 59. At least that was my experience when I had one in my Hamer Studio Custom. I'm a huge fan of Eric Clapton's tone with Cream and to me the 59 just nails that tone. I guess I just prefer the balance of bass vs. mids vs. treble in the 59 compared to Custom 5.

But the C5 is a great pickup and alot of players here really love it.

It's just that the Clapton Cream tone is my benchmark for humbucker tone and the 59 gets closer to that tone than the C5 does.

I can vouch for what Lew is saying. I'm having no trouble getting those Clapton tones with a '59 in the Bridge of my SG.
