Re: 59/custom & custom/custom ?

Only ever had experience with one from your list, the Custom 5. I liked the pickup. It was very clear, almost like an airier JB without so much of the mid spike. Nice harmonics though under gain and it didn't seem to get muddy at all.

Re: 59/custom & custom/custom ?

The Custom 5 is more scooped and sounds great in mid-heavy guitars. The Custom Custom has a mid spike, with softer bass. It is great for hard rock crunch and buttery leads. The CC is the warmest of the bunch. The 59/Custom Hybrid is more like a PAF-type, with expanded bass & better dynamics than higher output pickups. I have all 3, in different guitars. You can directly compare them with our new website's Compare function, too.

Re: 59/custom & custom/custom ?

mincer pretty much summed it up perfectly! I will add a small tidbit or 2. Depends how aggressive you want to go. (you mentioned hot paf) The Custom is described as PAF on steriods. It is a great choice for rock and metal. and it cleans up nicely too. All you listed are great choices. Based on what Mincer said as far as what you want to accomplish. If the guitar tone needs fattened up in the mids: CC. If its kinda of middy:C5. If you want the ballsiest of them: Custom . And the 59/custom hybrid is an AWESOME pickup!! It covers a ton of ground and has alittle more vintage vibe to it.

You also mention the Joe B set. That one is going to be very vintage PAF sounding..

One last note.. If you still arent sure.... All of the customs (cept the hybrid) are the same with different magnets. You could by one and swap the magnet to try a diff one. CC has Alnico 2, c5 alnico 5, custom ceramic. I like them all depending on the guitar and LOVE the hybrid in about everything and also LOVE custom 8's. Where I take any of the Custom series and put an alnico 8 mag in it.
